Rudy and immigration ...'80s speech on legalization is used against him

WASHINGTON - As a top Justice Department official in the 1980s, Rudy Giuliani helped sell the Reagan administration's comprehensive immigration bill, which would give "amnesty" to 3 million illegal immigrants by making their stay here legal.

Giuliani gave speeches back then promoting many of the same ideas that stirred heated debate this year in Congress and led to the rejection of President George W. Bush's comprehensive immigration bill.

"Some groups staunchly oppose legalizing any undocumented aliens," Giuliani told the Bar Association of the City of New York on Oct. 14, 1981. "There is no other choice but to legalize these people."

He added: "To hunt them down, apprehend them and expel them from the country is impractical, a waste of limited resources, inhumane and ultimately destructive to the continuing tradition of America."

Now those words, and his public support for illegal immigrants as New York City mayor in the 1990s, have come back to haunt his run for the GOP presidential nomination.

Last week, rival Mitt Romney put Giuliani on the defensive by accusing him of running New York as a "sanctuary city" for illegal immigrants.

This week, Giuliani is trying to fight back, to combat an image that Steven Camarota of the immigration hardline Center for Immigration Studies calls "pro-illegal immigrant."

Today, Giuliani heads to South Carolina, where he will promise that if elected he will end illegal immigration, which he calls a "security problem."

Giuli is weak on national security. How many terrorists and potential terrorists would be included in “amnesty”

Rudy’s position was the same as Reagan’s. Hard to fault that even though the 86’ bill was a disaster.

26 years later, the same rhetoric. He still doesn't get it.

Giuliani, Oct. 14, 1981:

"Some groups staunchly oppose legalizing any undocumented aliens. There is no other choice but to legalize these people."

"To hunt them down, apprehend them and expel them from the country is impractical, a waste of limited resources, inhumane and ultimately destructive to the continuing tradition of America."

"You hear that, Mr. Giuliani? That is the sound of inevitability."

Hey, don't drag Reagan's name through the mud...Reagan built our border wall with his bare hands, and fought intruders using a rare form of Judo.

Three comments in response. First, Rudy made this speech in 1981, long before the Reagan amnesty. He believes this stuff personally.

Second, the Reagan amnesty was a mistake, but mistakes happen. What is far worse is when politicians actively seek to make the same mistake a second time - and Rudy was part of the cabal as he pushed for amnesty before it became a hot-button issue.

And third, Rudy fought to keep NYC's sanctuary city policy in the courts - and then defied a court order to stop doing such.

He is a shamnesty true believer. And it is going to be impossible for him to spin away from his past, just as it was impossible for him to do such on abortion.

Reagan saw the fatal flaws and learned from the experience. Giuliani, who helped design the policy, doesn't see that and wants to do it again! Giuliani, as mayor, contributed to the failure of the '86 bill by making NY a sanctuary city and not allowing the federal government to enforce the very laws he supposedly supported in the original enforcement provisions.

It's very easy to find fault.

President Eisenhower expelled illegals from our country....with limited resources and it was not destructive to the continuing tradition of America..

Supporting “amnesty” back in the 1980’s, as a solution to the illegal immigrant problem, was one strategy that was tried. Experience shows, however, that “amnesty” was not a viable course of action. Because so many of its provisions were NOT enforced, the legislation was demonstrated as a bad idea then.

And basically re-introducing the same bill today, in the face of the previous debacle, sounds suspiciously like a test of just how much Barbra Streisand can be rammed “down the throat” of the American public.

Because Rudy Giuliani may have supported the idea THEN, does not mean he is equally enthusiastic about returning to what proved to be failed policy today. If people are going to criticize Rudy’s political positions, at least make sure that really is his current position.

Actually he is not lieing, he is omitting. He recently said that we have to identify them and give them tamper proof ID cards. He doesn’t think we can get rid of them so just wants to make it legal for them to stay.

I will never vote for the man.

Rudy and immigration .........

We, the people, are NOT going to get straight answers from the morons and imbeciles at the levers of our legal and legislative system (or who want to be).

The pols are on their knees fellating illegals to advance their crass political ambitions. This is organized crime John Gotti could only dream of----the government in league with criminal illegal aliens.

=========================================

Giuliani is now, and has always been, in league with the alien hordes.

Illegal animals are raping, murdering and looting and pillaging the US govt------and politicians like Rooty stand around and count-up illegal votes.

Mayor Rooty led a rat pack of elected and appointed government officials who aided and abetted law-breaking with complete impunity.

We have no reason to believe Rooty'll change now---when he needs every single solitary vote in his vain quest for the presidency.

Everything Rooty says is is s-o-o-o predictable...........and nauseating.

It’s not just Rudy and his supporters promoting illegal aliens. I have argued endlessly with Fred supporters that he has stated that he only opposes a “blanket” amnesty and wants to figure out who is here and give them amnesty. Yes, I suppose that means weeding out the bad from the so-called “good” (however he proposes to be able to do that!)...still, it would be rewarding (the majority of) illegals and I am OPPOSED to amnesty in ANY form for ANY illegal alien. Apparenly Fred and his supporters are not (see the thread posts below), which is why I have repeatedly tried to make Fred’s position clear and have been met repeatedly with accusations that I am lying, misleading, smearing, etc.

I've read that NYC Mayor Rudy's anti-gun lawsuit is still working it's way through the the courts as well.

How anyone can believe Rudy is conservative or even a Republican is amazing.
