I think the government oversteps its authority when it attempts to regulate hunting on private land.

This is an example of why I'm not a pure libertarian. The principle of what you say makes perfect sense, except it ignores the obvious outcome, which is harmful to all, and without a solution based on individual responsibility.

During the 18th and early 19th century, many areas of the country had a farm on every 40 acres. White tail deer were hunted to extinction in those areas. Assuming that is a bad thing, there is no other plausible remedy other than people agreeing to limits.

There is also the problem of claiming ownership of wild animals. A deer could belong to twelve different people during one day. Its a perplexing issue that I think is fairly well regulated by a government of the people (with a few glaring exceptions). Keeping the state our servant is the key.
