Michigan College Republicans Welcome Fred Thompson Presidential Campaign
Young GOP leaders express interest in and support for undeclared candidate
WAYNE COUNTY , MICH. Michigan Federation of College Republicans Co-chair Jeff Wiggins announced his support for Former Senator Fred Thompson's prospective presidential campaign today and noted that dozens of young GOP activists are interested in the candidate.
"Young conservatives in Michigan realize that Fred Thompson offers us the most electable conservative, and he's the candidate many of us will support," Wiggins explained. Though Fred Thompson has yet to enter the presidential race, past and present College Republican leaders are already signing up to help organize college campuses for him this fall.
Conservative students from fourteen of Michigan's four-year colleges and three of Michigan's community colleges have already signed up online in a Facebook group to volunteer for Fred Thompson for President. "We're supporting Fred Thompson because of his conservative stand on the issues," reported Jeff Wiggins, "and more are expected to sign up as soon as Thompson announces." Wiggins also predicted that young people previously committed to other campaigns would immediately support Thompson once his entrance was official. There is apparent dissatisfaction with the current leading candidates among many young Republicans.
"Candidates like Rudy Giuliani and John McCain are just too liberal for college conservatives to stomach," according to Paula Barrett, a Wayne State University student and Secretary of the Michigan Federation of College Republicans.
Though Thompson has yet to enter the race, the latest EPIC/MRA poll from August 2007 shows Fred Thompson leading all other Republican candidates among likely primary voters in Michigan.
