At this point I don’t think either party wants this settled. It makes such a handy campaign issue that they just can’t bear the thought of not being able to use it any more.

Actually, I think the Democrats just wish the whole issue would go away.

They've learned too many times that they don't win elections supporting gun control. They lose them.

There are many people out there who might agree with the Democratic candidate on every other issue but will cast their vote for the candidate who supports the rights of gun owners --often at the Democrats' loss. Hence, all the pro-gun Dems who won congressional races last year.

This issue is a loser for Democrats..

IMHO, I disagree. The neoCOMs took the issue off the table by running many RKBA candidates in 2006. They took back control of Congress. Now they can't be anything but themselves, a collection of multicultural special interests, in denial of how they won in 2006. IMHO, they're walking into an ambush of their own making. Since 1994, this has been a loosing issue for the neoCOMs.

Interesting point.

And I’ve always maintained that the NRA and Brady Bunch need each other in order to exist.

It wasn't an issue in 2006. The neoCOMs recruited RKBA candidates. They took over the Congress. Now they're stuck on stupid again. It's fine by me.
