The man behind the haircut
San Francisco Chronicle ^ | 8/16/7 | Debra J. Saunders

ELIZABETH EDWARDS complained to the Progressive magazine that anti-war critics such as Sen. Barack Obama are "behaving in a holier-than-thou" manner on Iraq. Too bad for Edwards that Obama opposed the war in Iraq in 2002, while her husband then-Sen. John Edwards - as well as Sens. Joe Biden, Hillary Clinton and Christopher Dodd - voted for the Iraq war resolution.

Holier-than-thou anti-war Democrats. Isn't that phrase redundant?

Elizabeth Edwards now is more than John Edwards' wife. She has become his Spiro Agnew. Remember Agnew, President Richard M. Nixon's first vice president and designated hatchet man, known famously for dismissing critics as "nattering nabobs of negativism."

Mrs. E isn't quite as lyrical as Agnew. Recently, she told Salon.com that Hillary Clinton seemed to feel the need "to behave as a man and not talk about women's issues." Not much alliteration in that slam.

Worse, last month, Elizabeth Edwards complained, "We can't make John black, we can't make him a woman. Those things get you a lot of press, worth a certain amount of fundraising dollars."

That's right: All Edwards has is a wife with cancer. As fiercely as the couple tries to play that victim card, Edwards remains in third place in the polls. His RealClearPolitics poll average of 12 percent lags far behind Clinton's 40 percent and Obama's 21 percent.

Elizabeth Edwards also accused Obama of "lifting her husband's best lines" from 2004, "which is maybe not surprising since one of his speechwriters was one of our speechwriters, his media guy was our media guy." She complained that Obama is using John Edwards' rhetoric - turning "hope is on the way" to "the audacity of hope" - which I guess is wrong because Edwards apparently now owns the word "hope."

Every time an Edwards opens his or her trap,...

This woman is obviously aiming to become the new HRC--"Vote for one, you get two!"

Big-mouthed, conceited and ignorant is no way to go through life, ma'am.

The truly weird part about Mrs. Edwards and her husband is that she'll probably die before the primary is even held. With her incurable cancer, she appears to have lost about a third of her body weight since this campaign started, and there's still over a year before the General election.

If I loved my wife, and she was dying of cancer, and I had millions-of-dollars of other peoples money, I think I could come up with better ways for me and her to spend her last days on earth than campaigning for a position that she'll probably never see.

Then again, I'm not an ambulance-chasing lawyer either .................... FRegards

Great comment. I was befuddled when she announced her illness and intention to go on with the campaign. The two of them are making it very hard for liberals to claim RELIGIOUS people are the only "die-hard wackos".

I'm sure the two of them are convinced that the world won't stop turning if they abandon his quest for the presidency, but to be frank, I find their decision creepy.

A loving couple shouldn't behave this way, IMHO.

I don’t know.

Fly all over the country, making ‘appearances’.

Have your wife do most of your public speaking.

Raise just enough to get matching funds.

Your wife dies, you collect the insurance on top of that.

You don’t win. Big deal. You’ve got tons of cash, you are young and ‘pretty’, and so you now play the rich widower that was almost President.

Money for nothing and your chicks for free.

Specifically, which Democrat candidate makes people proud to be Americans? Which inspires hope and optimism for the future? Which one is speaking about specific, sane (i.e. sans "let's invade Pakistan"), solutions to real-world problems?

From the slang dictionary:

beard: 1. [kwn LV, mid 60s] to date woman to prevent the suspicion of being homosexual. 2. a woman who dates a homosexual to prevent suspicion of his homosexuality, or to help him socially. Synonyms: flinking 3. n. a straight woman married to or involved with a gay man. The gay man may be in the public eye, and may have a beard to hide the fact that he is gay. (”She is just his beard.”)

My wife cuts my hair. ‘Not sure what she charges.

That reminds me of the old line about how much a marriage license costs: $2 down, and the rest of your paychecks for the rest of your life.

(and worth every penny)

Nasty stuff, this backbiting among the ‘Progressives’. Charged words, ‘hatchet job, slammed’, especially comparison with Nixon’s VP, Agnew. SFchronical won’t allow Edwards or the missus to get in Obama’s (the annointed one’s), way. So what if Mrs. Edwards has terminal cancer. They tag that with ‘All Edwards has is a wife with cancer’, which as everyone knows doesn’t compare to the victimhood of being black or a woman. (And sneer that all Edwards has now is ‘hope’). This is a vile column. The writer should be ashamed.

All true. But you have managed to make your husband appear to be a Eunich thanks to your own actions, Big E.

That works with your gay college friends that wanted to ‘snake him’ but not with the other 97% of the population.
