The big cities want the illegals counted to boost their representation in Congress. But that is not how it should have ever been calculated. Representation should be based on the number of U.S. citizens only.
Consider how that could reduce the electoral impact of California.
I suspect this is a ploy to keep up or boost the congressional representation in states that harbor high numbers of illegals.
This was discussed on Hannity and Colmes tonight....and a Republican Rep? from Michigan, I think, said, yes the Census is supposed to count all (does not SAY citizens.) BUT, does the Constitution of the US apply to all people who are here...illegally? I would say not.
Guess what, Kelly...
You don't have the final word. You have a boss to answer to, he has his and the ultimate boss in the American citizen.
If you don't like that get the 'Help Wanted' classifieds ASAP.
Stand by.
I have seen that line six times in the last three days, but not once any Constitutional or statutory citation to back it up.
I didn't believe it the first time and I don't believe it now. Although I'm not from Missouri, show me!
Dammit.
Easy enough to understand, but the nuances can get absurd.
If we are in the middle of an invasion from say, Canada, must they count the Canadian invading force for representation purposes?
Implicit is the (D'OH!) assumption that only citizens and legal residents may be represented.
They damn sure better increase them!
What raids??
She told me it is required by law,I told her,get off my porch,I gotta go to work.
Two days later she's back,so I humored her with her questions,I don't think she thought my answers were as funny as I did;)
“On Lou Dobbs show tonight they asked the salient question: Why should CA keep getting more representation in Congress because of all the Mexican squatters, while a state like PA loses representation because it only has US citizens? Good question indeed.”
Overall, yes...California gains representation. Although the other hand, so do other ‘red’ states. Personally I distain the whole idea of gaining seats from illegal immigrants.
Last time I calculated, ‘red states’ would have roughly 6-10 more seats in the house if illegal immigrants weren’t counted. I don’t know what to expect in 2010. Hopefully none.
You ever wonder why the supreme court appointment of our new chief justice was such a concern the ‘one person one vote’ supreme court decesions...there you go. Dems see a growing trend for them.
Publius6961: I sure do not agree that illegal aliens or invading Canadian armies should be counted!
This guy is joking right? which efforts would those be? come on sure they caught a few thousand but still are doing nothing to get the other 10/12 million.
The higher your population is, the more federal hand outs you receive.
I could be wrong but I believe you also get more representation in congress, even if the extra people are not eligible to vote. A lot of the states with sanctuary cities have been losing population.
That is the original intent of the census. ________________________________________________________
"the more federal hand outs you receive"
Yes, that is certainly a modern "unintended consequence"
