NOT-YET-RUNNING THOMPSON STUMPS IN IOWA
New Yoirk Post ^ | August 18, 2007 | CHARLES HURT

August 18, 2007 -- DES MOINES, Iowa - Fred Thompson wandered very close to getting into the 2008 presidential race yesterday in his first foray here - riding a wave of political celebrity but carefully skirting the pitfalls of specifics. The former senator from Tennessee, who is expected to enter the race next month, wants to be the conservative alternative to Rudy Giuliani but refused repeated requests yesterday to rule out raising taxes. "We are in the process of gradually bankrupting future generations in this country," Thompson said of Social Security and other entitlement programs that will plunge the federal government deeply into debt over the next decade. But Thompson, who played the tough-talking, straight-shooting D.A. on "Law & Order," didn't talk about how to fix that thorny problem. Thompson did supply some tough talk about terrorism during campaign events in this first-in-the-nation caucus state. He warned that the United States has not come to grips with "the threat that's facing us in the global war against radical Islamic fundamentalists." "We're dealing with folks that want to bring us to our knees and bring Western civilization to its knees," Thompson said to enthusiastic applause from the small crowd of Iowans seated on hay bales at the state fair. In a short speech at the Iowa State Fair, he rang all the conservative bells and even sounded a little like Ronald Reagan. "I am unabashedly pro life, I am pro second amendment, and I don't apologize for the United States of America," Thompson said over cheers and applause. "This country has shed more blood for the freedom of other people than all the other nations in the history of the world combined, and I'm tired of people feeling like they've got to apologize for America."

Funny how this is the only article that I've been able to find that says Fred refused to rule out raising taxes. You'd think if this was what really happened in Iowa a day or so ago it would be all over the Internet and the lead story on the cable news networks.

Personally I think the author of this article pulled this one out of his you know what!

I am disappointed that Fred doesn’t rule out a tax hike. The his blind loyal supporters don’t realize that they might be getting a “pig in a poke”.

Fred is fuzzy on taxes, fuzzy on abortion, fuzzy on immigration. He might be another Guilani without the youth or energy.

I'm not. Better he serves eight years and never raises taxes than has disaster hit, raises them, then is called a liar.

He's running for president, not God :)

We would not be at the verge of Social Security or any other program bankruptsy if we would deny illegal invaders all benefits paid for by American taxpayers.
