I’m really sick of the arguement that you can’t support this war unless you are willing to “force” your children to enlist to fight. This was even tried against George Bushs’ girls.

Although his campaign said Mr. Romney’s remarks were taken out of context, his response to the pointed question drew potshots because of his mention of what his sons were doing in his campaign, including that his son Josh had driven a Winnebago to all of the state’s 99 counties.

Mitt is being a bit modest here. It just wasn't any Winnebage, but an EM-50 Urban Assault Vehicle.

Definitely not a Romney supporter here but he does not have to answer for his childrens’ choice not to enter a volunteer military. It is strictly their choice to make as responsible adults. I know I don’t feel I have to answer for my children’s choice in this matter and I served in my time (1978-84).

I’m all for Mitt being accountable for his kids’ choices if the Internet inventor and doctor of climate change is held accountable for his kid’s choices when he’s breathlessly put forward by the Slimes as a strong candidate waiting in the wings.

Romney’s kids have no obligation to serve, true enough.

But it is fair and square to make the observation that each and every one of them chose to not serve......not even in the Guard or Reserves or any other sort of National service such as Peace Corps or others similar to it.

“If this war is so important, why is it O.K. for you to support our loved ones fighting it but not send your own sons?” said Ms. Lessin

The fact that Mr. Romney’s sons have not served is not necessarily surprising, she said, because the military tends to be dominated by those from less well-to-do backgrounds.

Can the NY Slimes go one day without LYING? (that's rhetorical) That 'only the poor (or black) enlist' canard has been disproved so many times it isn't funny any more.

In any case its freaking irrelevant. Are his kids running for POTUS - uh, no. Plus, I believe young adult Mormons go on a one year 'mission' to some pretty god forsaken places around the globe, many more dangerous than the Motor Pool at Ft Knox. Plus, what part of voluntary military don't they understand???

BUT - since the Slimes is bringing up Military Service could they please ask Rooty once again why he DODGED THE DRAFT. His 'I didn't like the tactics' excuse doesn't cut it.

(the msm and the RATS are pretty much laying off Rooty knowing Hillary will clean his clock in an EC landslide)

Excerpt:

Of others seeking the presidency, Representative Duncan Hunter, Republican of California, talks often on the stump about his son, Duncan Jr., who served two tours in Iraq with the Marines and is on his third in Afghanistan.

“I think it’s valuable to have a commander in chief who can look the American people in the eye and say, ‘We’re all in this together,’ ” said Mr. Hunter, who is a Vietnam veteran.

This all would have blown over in a single news cycle if it hadn’t been for Romney’s asinine, off-the-cuff quip that some of his sons were serving their country by trying to get him elected president.

Romney's success demonstrates one thing: The American people, in an increasingly dangerous world, want a wise and dependable leader.

Romney may not be one, but his decent, clean-cut, no-nonsense, puissant image is what's carried him so far. Americans want wisdom and greatness--not a sociopath or a slick snake-oil salesman or a drug-dazed hippie or an angry iconoclast or a loose cannon.

America has always produced great leaders, though from time to time some real jackasses have been elected to the Presidency.

But in this dangerous world, Americans are in no mood for a Freakshow. That's bad news for the Democrats.

Has anyone at the NYT’s asked Hillary why Chelsea isn’t serving in the military since she voted for the war?! I didn’t think so.

Nancy Lessin, co-founder of Military Families Speak Out, an antiwar group

NANCY LESSIN: There are so many that have bought into what this administration is trying to sell, which is in order to be patriotic, in order to support the troops, you have to support the war. It is absolutely possible to support the troops and oppose the war. NO, IT ISN'T!!!

******

So, according to her, everyone is stupid but her. These grown men and women are very capable of deciding for themselves what THEY WANT TO DO without her 'help'!!!

Romney has enough problems with his record that we don’t really need to look into the military service of his children for more.

That having been said, a commander-in-chief with prior military service is far preferrable in a time of war than a mere businessman.

I’ve been serving in the Army for 5 years now. I plan on making it a career. However, as long as an American is being a productive member of society (productive being the key word), then no one should question whether or not they should join the military. It’s not for everybody. Quite frankly, if a lot of these politicians’ children were to enlist, it may actually degrade the military’s quality.

Bear in mind that approximately 1 in 5 young persons are eligible to serve in the military. Asthma, weight, and Ritalin being automatic disqualifying conditions. I know it took weeks of paperwork to get my own asthma waiver (since I had a recent history of exercise-induced asthma, but that had long since disappeared since I took up marathons as a hobby.) We therefore cannot assume that Romney's sons didn't serve due to a lack of interest.

Still, it is disturbing that children of the elite are shunning the military. In any war, we need the attitude that we're all in this together. When the people sending other people's kids off to die are not sending their own, this will inevitably breed resentment.

If this is a question that any parent should be asked, then maybe every parent in America should be required to answer. But it’s a dumb question because so few do serve in the military these days, and actually, only a few can.

There are about 1.6 million now serving in the military. Each year about 4 million kids are born, and about four million turn 18 and start careers or further their education. Of the four million, the military barely needs 200,000 recruits each year (if that).

Since so few Americans do, or even could serve in the military, this is just a cheap question asked of some candidates, but not others.

And the next time you hear someone singing the praises of mandatory national service, ask just what productive use they’d make of four million eighteen year-olds per year?

The only “chink” is in the brain of the NYTimes.

By their logic, you must be pregnant to vote on issues involving children.

Or you must own animals to vote on issues involving livestock.

Or you must be an oil well developer to vote on issues involving energy independence.

The NY Times, and anyone who uses that logic to deride anyone, not just Romney, is delusional.

IF his son’s are taxpaying Americans they are indeed serving this nation, some body has to pay the taxes that fund those that volunteer to serve.
