Most mornings, my assistant goes through my e-mail before I do, culling out the ones that are simply vicious, vindictive and mean, so I don’t have to see them.

Our rule is that threats get reported to the police, while mere ugliness just gets deleted. But once in a while, I get up early or she gets in late, and I make the mistake of clicking on messages I just shouldn’t see. It ruins the morning, and then some.

For the record, Susan Estrich was on the Hannity show and essentially called Juanita Broaddrick a liar. Of course she was not telling the truth. How does Susan know? Well, she asked Bill, and Bill said he didn't rape her. Okay, Susan, aren't you just so special. Bill lied to his wife, his daughter, his cabinet, his party leaders, his friends, and all of the American people. But, he wouldn't lie to you. Right?

I put out the challenge for Susan to speak with Juanita. Juanita was absolutely ready to do it. Unfortunately, Estrich refused. Susan, as a fellow rape survivor, you know that if you met Juanita and heard her story face to face, you would know she was telling the truth. You can't afford to know the truth. How could you then support Bill and Hillary?

Well, Susan, it is not over. You are going to be challenged again.

FWIW, everyone in the public eye gets hate mail. I’m an obscure peon at a small town paper, yet every few months, a multi-page, single-spaced screed appears in my mailbox, stuffed into an envelope that can barely contain the venom within.

It goes with the territory.

Hate speech is pretty subjective. Screaming hate speech can also hide ulterior motives, like censoring anyone who disagrees with you no matter how logical and articulate they are.

It's okay for her assistant to see hateful messages, but it just ruins the morning for Estrich to see them.
