...Sunday afternoon's arrest of immigration activist Elvira Arellano isn't a result of the federal government's new campaign against employers who hire illegal workers. But the abrupt arrival of law-enforcement agents outside a Los Angeles church -- after Arellano had spent a year claiming sanctuary at a church in Chicago -- is one more provocation for accelerating a strikingly divisive national debate...
No capture of a mother being separated from her son is a pleasure to behold. But the facts of Elvira Arellano's story make her difficult to view as a victim. She came to the U.S. illegally from Mexico and worked on a cleaning crew at O'Hare International Airport until she was arrested during a post-Sept. 11, 2001, security sweep at this nation's airports.
It turned out she had entered the U.S. illegally once before -- and had been arrested and deported, only to return. She also had used a fake Social Security number.
Arellano sought to avoid another deportation -- and since 2003 has received three stays. Her supporters called for a moratorium on all deportations until Congress passed an immigration reform bill that would help her. That unfortunate request no doubt hurt her cause more than it helped: ...this country isn't in the business of suspending the enforcement of a statute while Congress mulls whether to change it. She has gotten numerous breaks, but she remains subject to U.S. law ...
That arrest does, though, qualify as just the sort of highly visible consequence that stronger enforcement of this country's immigration laws will create...
For now, though, that law is abundantly clear. And Elvira Arellano made choices that invited the feds to enforce it.

Congressman Billybob
Why should illegals have a “path to citizenship?”
Register them, and once registered, let them work here, but NOT AS CITIZENS. If they want citizenship, they should have to leave and return through proper immigration channels.
The working part is ok. The automatic path to being a DEMOCRAT is not. That is why NO Democrats are involved in national security at the southern border.
re: 2
Indeed, the vast majority of the country appears united on this issue.

Right on! That woman, like most who have anchor babies to ensure their ability to stay here are merely using the child as a prop. I hold an extra measure of contempt for those illegals who try to portray their criminal presence in this country as a human rights issue.
Thou hast the right of it! A "path to legality" is absolutely as far as I'm willing to take "amnesty" (and that only when all other avenues of enforcing our current laws have been tried and provably failed to work). NO citizenship outside the normal legal process.
Right on! Jerry Rivers is in the “No Fly” zone at my home as well. My hand goes for the remote immediately at the mention of his name.
All of these complaints tell you what social class the journos think that they belong to. So what they are doing is masking their own self-interest in cheap labor as magnanimity, and paying for it by denying better-paying jobs to native born Americans.

We have a WINNER!
You get to spend all that money to buy votes, err, I mean 'help the needy' and 'invest in infrastructure', and then you get to feel good about yourself and give others moral lectures about their responsibility 'to the community', all to the approving cooing of the large primates in journalism and amongst your peers.
Sometimes I think the only difference between the ape-men at the beginning of 2001 A Space Odyssey and our current political, business and journalistic elites is the gabardine suits.

Correct again!
