The Utter Uselessness of the Petraeus Report
The American Prospect ^ | August 22, 2007 | Paul Waldman

Posted on 08/22/2007 1:44:19 PM PDT by Col. Bob

If you think the White House-penned report on Iraq will be anything other than a validation of "the surge" and the Bush administration's larger strategy, you haven't been paying attention.

Just a few weeks from now, the most eagerly anticipated premier of the year will finally be here, complete with fierce disagreement among the critics and relentless hype by the producers, cameras furiously clicking when the starring players emerge in public. That premier is the report coming in mid-September from U.S. ambassador to Iraq Ryan Crocker and, more importantly, Gen. David Petraeus, commander of American forces there. If you're expecting a surprise ending, you shouldn't hold your breath.......

Not that they're taking any chances. Last week the Los Angeles Times reported, "Despite Bush's repeated statements that the report will reflect evaluations by Petraeus and Ryan Crocker, the U.S. ambassador to Iraq, administration officials said it would actually be written by the White House." Well knock me over with a feather. The Bush White House, exercising an iron grip over the message delivered by people who are supposed to offer their assessments based on their professional knowledge and an objective reality? Who'd have thought we'd see the day?

I believe Ptraeus and Crocker to be honorable men. I am uncomfortable with the suggestion that the White House will be writing Petaeus' report. Would much rather see his report followed by White House comments.

Your thoughts?

Well somebody wrote the report...is it that difficult to find out who wrote it?

I thought the legislation required it to be done the way it’s being done?

Seems Mr Waldman has already made up his mind, and I’m betting he’s never been there.

Oh, the MSM is scared to death that the surge is working and this is a pre-emptive strike to discredit any good news that comes out. If the surge works and we get control of Iraq, the Dems are doomed in 2008. The Dems are all in betting that the US is going to get embarrassed in Iraq.

I’m sure Petraeus will be making sure the report is accurate. The law congress passed says the Whit House will write the report.

The utter uselessness of Paul Waldman's screed....

He has no idea what the report will say ... but he's sure it will be "useless."

Nice.

"The legislation says that Petraeus and Crocker 'will be made available to testify in open and closed sessions before the relevant committees of the Congress' before the delivery of the report. It also clearly states that the president 'will prepare the report and submit the report to Congress' after consultation with the secretaries of state and defense and with the top U.S. military commander in Iraq and the U.S. ambassador.

This is a liberal publication intended to sway people to liberalism. Their self-description begins thusly:

The American Prospect was founded in 1990 as an authoritative magazine of liberal ideas, committed to a just society, an enriched democracy, and effective liberal politics. Robert Kuttner, Robert Reich, and Paul Starr launched the magazine initially as a quarterly.

Since then, the Prospect has grown into a magazine with a paid circulation of 55,000, a special in-depth report in most issues, and a daily Web magazine with more than 300,000 monthly visitors.

Our mission, simply put, is to rise to the momentous occasion that confronts all Americans who seek a just society built on our greatest traditions. Contemporary conservatism stands to thwart those traditions; it advances its agenda by way of stealth, fear-mongering, and a massive propaganda apparatus. It is our mission to expose that agenda and the lies that support it.[This is what they think of conservatives.]

Rising to our historical occasion also means reviving and rebuilding liberalism, renewing its connections both to American history and to people's lives in the 21st century, and giving progressive political leaders the weapons they need for battle. Through dogged reporting, cool analysis, witty commentary and passionate argument, the Prospect strives to beat back the right wing and to build a majority of true patriots who understand what really makes America great.

This post needs a barf

" I am uncomfortable with the suggestion that the White House will be writing Petaeus' report."

That nonsense spread from an online Washington Post blog from some dork called Dan Froomkin and every DEM and MSMer ran with it. It's a case of liberals believing their own lies -- even this dumb as a rock author of the article Paul Waldman.

BDS ALERT!!!

Paul Waldman is a senior fellow at Media Matters for America and the author of Being Right is Not Enough: What Progressives Must Learn From Conservative Success.

Your thoughts?

The way the Democrat Congress wrote the law, the White House writes and submits the report.

You've bought into the Democrat talking points if you believe it's politics on Bush's part.

my thought?.. it will not matter what is writen, or by who

the only thing that will matter is what the MSM’s will flood the headlines with

if you have about 20 minutes sometime, give this a listen.
this man absolutely nails what has happened since the 60’s to liberals and the extents they will go to to bring down America

Just part of the preemptive “duck and cover” policy of the leftists. They know the surge is working, despite all their efforts to say otherwise. The MSM will help give them all the cover they need by ignoring all the statements made to date similar to dingy harry saying “the war is lost”...

By having the testimony and the report, the libs will take any slight difference and claim a whitewash and a coverup.

Anyone want to take my wager?
