In the latest Gallup presidential poll, former Tennessee Sen. Fred Thompson ranks second among Republican voters.
One political strategist said Thompson could swim the Mediterranean with all the "testing of the waters" he's done, but he still has yet to take the plunge and officially announce his candidacy.
Thompson got razed for wearing expensive Gucci loafers to the Iowa State Fair, but he did eat some meat on a stick and he even held a pig.
Would he do all that if he weren't running?
On the radio show "Mickelson in the Morning," Thompson said, "I have declared that I'm going to declare."
Thompson has certainly been honing his message.
"Some people in this country apparently think if we can pull out of Iraq, our problems will be over. You and I know better than that," Thompson said in a recent speech to a Veterans of Foreign Wars convention in Kansas City.
And the other candidates are treating him like a rival.
When Thompson wrote on his blog Tuesday that he'd spent a lot of time in New York City filming the TV show "Law and Order" and that he doesn't like the city's gun laws, a spokeswoman for former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani shot back.
"Those who live in New York in the real world not on TV know that Rudy Giuliani's record of making the city safe for families speaks for itself," said Giuliani's communications director, Katie Levinson, in a statement.
Enough Dress Rehearsal
Some are getting more than a little annoyed with Thompson's long rehearsal for a run. One liberal blogger just filed a complaint with the Federal Election Commission saying Thompson, who's already raised more than $3.4 million, should have to play by the same rules as the other candidates.
"Fred Thompson is breaking the law and it's very important to hold him accountable. Failure to do so would create a dangerous precedent for the electoral process," said Lane Hudson, a blogger for NewsForTheLeft.com.
Thompson's organization says Hudson's complaint is "completely without merit."
When and if Thompson says those two words, "I'm running," the dress rehearsal is over and the real show starts.
"Once you do get in, you don't have time for mistakes. You don't have time to be off message. You don't have time for diversion. You have to run a flawless campaign," said Frank Donatelli, a former political director for President Reagan.
Some say that Thompson's announcement may be coming too late. One adviser told ABC News that the Thompson camp realizes "there is a point where people will lose their patience." Many believe that an announcement from Thompson will come in early September.
Who cares? FRED makes the decisions, and Fred is well known for being extremely pro-Israel, and anti-Islamofascist.
The man is not in a policy advisor role. Get a grip.

It also appears that many of you may not have read Post 73.
This is not meant to be confrontational. It is strickly for your information. Unfortunately, we are so desperate for a candadate, that we turn the other way so that we don't see the negatives.
Just don't say you didn't know.
I don’t need your condescension. I have read every article pertaining to Fred that has been posted on this website, plus others. You are the one who is ignorant.
Abraham IS NOT campaign manager. I don’t care what you post, he is not and never has been Fred’s campaign manager. And even if he was, campaign managers MANAGE THE CAMPAIGN. Period.

Republican presidential candidate Fred Thompson is the most supportive of Israel
InfoIsrael.net ^ | June 11, 2007 | Anthony David Marks and Hannah Amit
Republican presidential candidate Fred Thompson is the most supportive of Israel out of a dozen or so politicians seeking to win the US presidential seat. The former actor, who has also served as a US senator, claims Israel has been too restrained in its responses to Palestinian terrorism.
Israel is at war, Thompson opined in a column for the conservative website Townhall.com. And the Jewish State has gone to incredible lengths to stop the war against them without harming Palestinian non-combatants.
Thompson is also recorded as supporting an Israeli military strike against Iran, should international boycotts and diplomacy fail to detour the Islamic Republic from its nuclear arms race.
Thompson is expected to make his first visit to Israel in the near future where he will meet with Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni and other senior officials.
Liberal political elements in Israel fear Thompson is too far-right in his opinions and may do eventual harm to Israel. There are many in Israel, however, who would welcome Thompson and his hard-line policy against terror onboard the US leadership team. (Sources: Israel Today/IHC)

That's the truth.
I don’t mean to insult anyone, but...
That would be good to know - but I’ve noticed that the pro-liberal media and the pro-republican candidate Freepers use the same methods.
I just want the truth.
I agree 100% with the truth! It is all America needs to succeed!

Personally, I think Fred Thompson is the smartest one of the bunch. It really is ridiculous how long the campaign has become. It’s just a way to keep has-been politicians employed for an extra year.
Bump to a good post.
Must be the remnant of the Hollyweird culture that he imbibed while in showbiz. Should have worn Allen-Edmonds - shoemaker of Presidents.
I lived in Iowa from 1974 to 2001: People wear Gucci footwear in Iowa, believe it or not. Most of the folks in Iowa ARE NOT farmers or working in agribusiness. Des Moines, where the Iowa State Fair is held, is the largest insurance center in the United States, with more home offices than any other city in the nation, so it’s not a exactly a “hayseed” burg.
“Who cares? FRED makes the decisions”
That’s the problem... He seems to be better at NOT making decisions.
He’s made the decision. And he gets to decide when he wants to announce it.
Those people who keep harping on this are either stupid or disengenuous. It is quite obvious that he his going to run. He wouldn’t do the things he’s doing if he wasn’t. Nobody has the right to demand that he follow their timetable.
