Video: Newt Gingrich discusses the war on terror at the National Press Club

Transcript:

I am really deeply worried. We have two grandchildren who are 6 and 8, and I believe they are in greater danger of dying from enemy activities than we were in the Cold War. There are thousands of people across this planet who get up every morning actively seeking to destroy the United States. They are spreading their poison by sermons, by the Internet, by a variety of recruiting devices

I believe we are on the edge of a precipice. The Iranians are desperately trying to build nuclear weapons, and they will use them. This is a state — look — read what Ahmadinejad says. He writes poems about the joy of being a martyr nation. He gets to wipe out Tel Aviv; maybe the Israelis use nuclear weapons and wipe out Tehran. He would accept that in a minute because he believes everybody in Tehran goes to heaven and everybody in Tel Aviv doesn’t.

We are in trouble, and somebody had better start talking about it in a blunt way.

We are simply not prepared today to be a serious country. I’ve been at this a long time. I am genuinely afraid that this political system will not react until we lose a city, and nobody in this country’s thought about the threat to our civil liberties the morning after we decide it’s that dangerous and how rapidly we will impose ruthlessness on ourselves in that kind of a world. I think those of you who care about civil liberties had better be thinking through how we win this war before the casualties get so great that the American people voluntarily give up a lot of those liberties.

I thought I heard him bashing the WOT a couple weeks ago.

Newt is right of course. I've been saying this since 9-11. The "We Will Never Forget" crowd and just about everyone else forgets about 16 acres of American soil leveled by terrorists:

Those buildings should have been rebuilt a year after the clean up. The only news we hear about the WTC is when someone finds a bone from one of the victims.

By these actions, or inaction, we have proved, once again that we are weak.

It's pathetic. IMO

I think he was bashing how it’s being conducted, saying we’re not yet serious about it. I agree with that, as would most on this forum. We have done a lot but not nearly enough — when issues that the MSM and Demagogues use to discredit much of what we do are allowed to prevent serious discussions of what more needs to be done, then yes I’d say the country is still not serious about defeating Islamo-fascism.

Fortunately, there are good numbers of great warriors defending us who ARE most serious about it, and who give their all to protect us. But as a political and media culture, I would agree with Gingrich that we have been very deficient. Not FRiends here, of course, but the squishy mealy-mouthed leftists who dominate the MSM, the Demagogic Party, and too much of the public life of this country.

The title should read “Newt Gingrich discusses the war on terror at the National Press Club,” so I’m not sure why you changed it. The speech, as one can clearly see by reading the transcript, has nothing whatsoever to do with “the modern road to the WH.” That title went with another article on the same link.

Slick Willie and his wife started their march to the White House back in the 60s. NOW THAT IS A SICKNESS! They are a couple of psychos.

Freeman Dyson, HERETICAL THOUGHTS ABOUT SCIENCE AND SOCIETY

To conclude this piece I come to my third and last heresy. My third heresy says that the United States has less than a century left of its turn as top nation. Since the modern nation-state was invented around the year 1500, a succession of countries have taken turns at being top nation, first Spain, then France, Britain, America. Each turn lasted about 150 years. Ours began in 1920, so it should end about 2070. The reason why each top nation’s turn comes to an end is that the top nation becomes over-extended, militarily, economically and politically. Greater and greater efforts are required to maintain the number one position. Finally the over-extension becomes so extreme that the structure collapses. Already we can see in the American posture today some clear symptoms of over-extension. Who will be the next top nation? China is the obvious candidate. After that it might be India or Brazil. We should be asking ourselves, not how to live in an America-dominated world, but how to prepare for a world that is not America-dominated. That may be the most important problem for the next generation of Americans to solve. How does a people that thinks of itself as number one yield gracefully to become number two?

Frankly, with what we see today, this scares the crap out of me.

I have to agree with Newt. Our Presidential elections, especially this year, are circus. When talking snowmen and moronic You Tube clips are used to frame the issues of this election we have gone insane. With the Democrats the choices, though all bad are more clear cut. Obama's gaffs on basic foreign policy are potentially worse than the first Clinton term when their were no adults in the White House. Hillary is simply a demagogue and a socialist who wants the Presidency for power and to impose her elitist will on the people. From Edwards on down it is just a descent into lunacy.

I simply do not know what to think of the Republican candidates. Rudy has some appeal for his leadership and understanding of the war on terror, but he has too much personal baggage. Fred Thompson has some Reagan like charm and would play well in the media, but I don't have a clue what he stands for. The rest who knows.

This election is one of the most important in our history and it will mean if we win or lose the war on terror. All of them need to quit the grandstanding and tell us what they believe and how they would shape the destiny of our country.

Newt is right! The scary thing is how many are already in America. Thanks to the open borders policy of this President, many Americans are going to die. Maybe not while he's in office, but sooner or later, they are going to strike again. It will go down in his legacy, and rightfully so. IMO!

I think the number one reason that America is going down is because that bunch of greedy, power hungry traitors in DC are arrogant and can’t see beyond their bank accounts!

Thank you for posting this.

Newt hits the nail on the head, with as much truth and fear as all Americans should feel.

My joy at American coming together after 911 lasted about 3 weeks and then I came to the realization that we will not "fight this war" in the manner which it must inevitably must be fought until 10's if not hundreds of thousands of Americans are massacred by the insane philosophy know as Islam.

Islam is not simply a religion and is most definitely not a "Philosophy of Peace".

I feared then, and my fears continue to grow that when GW proclaimed Islam as a "Religion of Peace" he made perhaps the greatest error of his tenure in office and he has made more than a couple.

I feared from the beginning that this "War On Terror" would be anything but WAR. And my fears were well founded.

We have been violating all the Principles of Mass, as taught in the US Military War Colleges for decades for too long to simply turn around and "do what must be done" inevitably.

There can be no "collateral" casualties in this conflict of Civilizations. NONE!

This is the real deal - It is either "us or them" - PERIOD - No middle ground will succeed.

I might add also a national disgrace there is still a hole there

Two of my grown children (early 20's) and I stopped at a Pizza joint today where they had a night time pictures of the WTC towers.

My children asked me why they have not been rebuilt yet.

I got to tell you I almost lost it out of sheer frustration with the morons running things.

It is sad, and at the same time makes us angry.

I sent this to The Beast, and asked her what she was going to do about it. No reply.

Hell Newt, get your priorities straight.

More US citizens were killed by illegals in the US from 1990 to present than US troops killed in the Mid East during the same time period.
