Wamp takes aim at media's campaign coverage

U.S. Rep. Zach Wamp, R-Tenn., blasted the "24-hour news cycle" Friday, saying that a barrage of coverage in a lengthy presidential campaign will turn off Americans.

"You think these candidates want to campaign for two and a half years for president? Are you kidding me?" Rep. Wamp said to members of the Chattanooga Civitan Club at Bessie Smith Hall.

Rep. Wamp said former U.S. Sen. Fred Thompson, R-Tenn., whom the congressman is backing for president, "knows he wasn't supposed to start this early."

"I don't know how it's going to end up, but y'all are going to be sick of these people by next summer, and that's unfortunate," Rep. Wamp said.

I've said this before and I'll say it again ... this 24/7/365/4year 'campaign' coverage is something which politicians engage in all the time throughout their career, but which has only been picked up on by the media in recent history (since the advent of CNN and other 24/7 'news' media in the late 80's)

Politicians used this newfangled media coverage to their advantage as a way to advance their personal political ambitions on the electorate. The Clinton's honed it to an art form to great success, and many others followed.

Since there is only so much actual "news" to be covered over any given 24 hour period, the media began to focus on politics and politicians ... who are more than willing to get up in front of a camera in order to advance their political careers. Hence the 24/7/365/4year 'election' cycle gained its roots.

Politicians are always in campaign mode, ....ALWAYS(!) ...., the only difference now is that their constant campaign mode is on television and radio and internet and everywhere else for all the world to see.

The MSM is only covering Obama, the Breck Girl and the Antichrist. If they covered all of the candidates, they could break up the tedium a bit.

I’d say it’s John Bailes who is worried.
