The "Culture of the Drunk" Migrates Northward
Street Level ^ | 8/26/07 | Darvin Dowdy

Texas and other border states have suffered as a result of illegal immigration for years. And we've received zero help from the northern states until some of that pain and suffering began to “migrate” north into their backyards and have a negative effect upon them. But that’s what we’ve learned to expect from the more self-centered segment of our U.S. population in the north/northeast. Ha! And so now it seems that they are on board with us and, hey, better late than never. Welcome aboard! We luv ya!

So now that most of the nation is on the same page, as the polls show, it might help solidify and unify our efforts if we break it down a bit. Analyze the problem. Actually there is a myriad of categories under the heading “Illegal Immigration Problem”. ( link ) One category that has been in the national news lately has been that of drunken illegals driving and killing U.S. citizens. You have the “Geraldo Riveras’” of the world saying that it is “irrelevant” that the perpetrator is illegal and that it could have just as easily been a drunken legal resident or citizen. Not so fast Geraldo. MADD says your wrong. I think they’ve done a few studies on the subject and know a bit more than Geraldo. (which isn’t saying much) MADD says just the opposite. Something that we, here in Texas, have known for decades. And that is, along with the illegal immigrants came their “drinking culture”. And we’re talking mostly the men folk here where drinking to excess is considered machismo or something like that. And according to the MADD study, conducted by the Alcohol Policy Group, drinking in Mexico can start at the tender age of 12 (or younger) and is considered a “rite of passage”. And get this – in Mexico there are 2 “Drunk Drivers Nights” per year! Christmas and New Years where its “hands off” of all drunk drivers by the authorities. Can you imagine this? It’d be fun to get on the roof of a sturdy building and watch the destruction derby below. But this fabulous MADD study clearly shows that the instance of drunk driving is lopsided in favor of Hispanics and apparently/specifically those from south of the border.

So the question begs to be answered. Can the surge in dui/drunk driving incidences be directly attributed to the increase of illegal immigrants streaming across our southern border? Seems a fairly easy question to answer. Huhmm? Darvin Dowdy

Also, they have been running jalopies into insured drivers on purpose since I was in CA in the 60’s for the insurance money.

You can always tell when an illegal Mexican is involved in the wreck, he gets out of the car and runs away. Provided he can run.

I am not sure if it is because he is illegal or because in Mexico the one who is still alive is at fault.

Oh, come now. As El Presidente Jorge W would say, “They’re only drinking bottom shelf booze Americans don’t want to consume.” Get these illegals out of here!

he’s right about one thing several years ago when I brought the subject up around my northern friends they would insinuate that it might be a racial thing. They seem to have lost that aspect here lately. Could it be because they are having to contend with it now?

Wow. How many families in Mexico spend their Christmas and New Years grieving the loss of a loved because of a drunk driver that the police couldn't arrest?

Of course, in our “sanctuary cities,” we 365 drunk driving nights when it’s “hands off” by the authorities.

This goes a long way towards explaining the problem with drunk driving in New Mexico. It’s not just a home-grown problem.

The littering thing goes along with it, too.

There was a family of Mexican extraction on our street that had a bunch of girls, and one of the guys that one of the daughters dated (thankfully for a short time) liked to drink those big cans of Coors Light or Bud Light and then heave the can into the yard belonging the guy who lived across the street. He did not appreciate that at all. If it had gone on much longer, there would have been harsh words or worse exchanged out in the street.

My husband was recently involved in a hit and run on the way to work - a guy ran a stop sign on a side road and pulled out in front of him - hubby could't stop fast enough on the wet pavement. Thankfully, he wasn't hurt, but there was about $5000 in damage to our car. He went to the police station in the area with as much information as he could remember about the car - he got a partial license plate and knew the color and make. The guy there pretty much laughed at him and asked him if he knew where he was (for those that know the Milwaukee area, he works near the Domes).

The cop told him that if it was a hit and run it was because: 1) the driver was drunk 2) the driver was illegal 3)the driver had illegal stuff in the car. or 4) all of the above.

Wow, MADD vs. Geraldo. I’d pay to see that cat-fight. What are the chances they would kill each other? :-p

That driver drove away. The ones that stand out for me are the drivers who run away on foot.
They will always be illegal Mexicans.

We were getting gas at a station in Freer Texas years ago, when a truck carrying a load of melons hit a truck and turned over. Melons were rolling every where and then we noticed the driver of the melon truck running through the rolling melons and he disappeared into a neighborhood. Were the melons stolen or was he illegal or both?

It’s not just drunk driving. The alcohol promotes lots of other crime. There’s a small farming town (actually several) near me where the police say they have one of the highest crime rates in the nation, but insist you’re safe as long as you stay away from the bars on Main St.

I hear ya’. In fact I have a post in the works on the Mexican litter problem that is also migrating north. Unless you’d like to take that one on for me. This stuff needs to be discussed. This is not about folks in the U.S. hating folks from Mexico. With a selective and controlled immigration program, we can “educate” those coming in w/regards to the do’s and don’t’s. But the way things are, well its chaos. DD

“I think they’ve done a few studies on the subject “

You can not do that, Dowdy. Citing MADD without providing a direct link to the statistic cited is bad form and against their terms of servidce. Your link goes to their home page (or statistics page) but not to the actual statistic. That is bad reporting.

By saying “I think” you prove you have NOT done the research.

Also, you provide a link to American spectator, but the title is MADD, which is a form of web site hijacking.

Admin moderator... This needs zotting.
