Democrats Put a Tentative New Emphasis on Supporting Pregnancy
California Catholic Daily ^ | August 26, 2007

The Los Angeles Times recently noted a "striking shift" in Democratic policies related to pregnant women and unborn children, featuring a "grab bag" of proposals to prevent unintended pregnancies and "encourage women who do conceive to carry to term" in a spending bill approved by the House of Representatives last month.

But in the subsequent weeks some pro-family policy analysts have accused Democrats of merely crafting a pro-life-sounding rhetoric to "sell the right on traditional liberal priorities," including expanded taxpayer-funded health care programs. Decrying a contraceptive-oriented approach, Rep. Mike Pence (R-Ind.) said the initiative is "not a common ground [he] can accept" because of the amount of funding that would go to Planned Parenthood clinics.

Democrats first field tested the policy (or rhetorical) shift during last year’s governors’ races in Michigan and Ohio, and Democratic presidential candidates increasingly are making a "more nuanced case" about abortion, says the Times' Stephanie Simon.

The Kaiser Daily Women's Health Policy Report. (Kaisernetwork.org,) provided details on the House-approved $152 billion Labor-HHS-Education appropriations bill (HR 3043), with emphasis on the "Reducing the Need for Abortions Initiative," which grew out of a bill crafted by Tim Ryan (pro-life D-OH) and Rosa DeLauro (pro-abortion D-CT) and passed as part of the FY 2008 bill. It would fund counseling in order to encourage more young women to consider adoption; sponsor advertising to alert low-income women that health care is available if they are "preparing for birth"; expand parenting education for pregnant women; and provide day care at federal job-training centers.

Perhaps they could strengthen emphasis on waiting until they are old enough to stop playing with dolls.

The Dems have changed their stance on abortion. They once supported abortion while denouncing opponents of abortion as dangerous, woman-hating religious fanatics. Now they support abortion while claiming to dislike the practice and announcing that they respect people with pro-life views.

It’s all smoke and mirrors, part of the Dems’ ploy to capture Christian values voters by lying to them.

yep, what do they really think about abortion?

Hillary has said that abortion can be a “tragic choice” that women in trouble are faced with. So they want to try to show compassion in their own way, while still not wanting to do anything to make abortion more difficult.

They went into a meltdown about the abortion decision this year, where the law banning partial birth abortion was upheld. At their core, they still want abortion on demand to be legal and available.

I don’t believe this will bear fruit but the Democrats have 3 really hard to sell issues, abortion, homosexuality, and anti-war. Abortion and Homosexuality are both the hardest and offer the least return. There isn’t a large number of people who have a vested interest in either of those issues. Most women never consider abortion as has always been the case, most people don’t care about homosexuality unless it is put squarely in their face or comes home in their child’s school backpack. I’ve never understood the commitment to either of those ideas from Democrats. They are losing ideas. People understand that killing babies and gay sex are not desirable or to be promoted.

GOP nominating Guiliani will neutralize the life issue. Guiliani now leading shows the GOP is moving away from pro-life as the Democrats may be moving more toward it. We live in interesting times.

Democratic presidential candidates increasingly are making a "more nuanced case" about abortion,

Abortion isn't a subject that needs to be "nuanced"

You either believe life begins at conception or you don't.

Abortion is murder or it isn't.

Nothing "nuanced" about it.

A democratic candidate that needs to be "nuanced" about abortion just isn't courageous enough to admit he believes abortion is a necessary evil and is willing to kill innocent life for political purposes

Do you think their philosophy will change once the election is over?

The Dems have changed their stance on abortion.

Correct.

They oppose abortion, until someone wants to have one.

They they support it on-demand.

Their philosophy? No. They will always be the party of "culture of death"

Their political positions will depend entirely on who the GOP runs
