Social acid has burnt the heart of Britain
Telegraph (UK) ^ | 26/08/2007 | John O'Sullivan

Posted on 08/26/2007 4:06:39 PM PDT by Panzerlied

Fifty years ago I was a schoolboy in a Liverpool suburb and a strong supporter of Everton like Rhys Jones. My parents were cautious and loving, but they had no qualms about letting me follow the team around the country.

That a boy might be killed by a drive-by shooter as he was returning from his local soccer practice would have struck them as an episode in a Latin American coup rather than a possibility in their relatively tranquil lives.

Not unreasonably. In 1955, the anthropologist Geoffrey Gorer described this tranquillity in his book Exploring English Character: "When we think of our faults, we put first, and by a long way, any lapse from our standards of non-aggression, bad temper, nagging, swearing and the like. Public life is more gentle than that reported for any society of comparable size and industrial complexity."

The title is incomplete. It should read:

‘The Acid Of Socialism Has Burned Out The Heart Of Britain’

Lefties today would think it horrible that a whale might get trapped in a net; but the rest of that quote would go completely over their heads...;)

This may seem funny, but the next “Cromwell” may be a muslim.

I think the fascist movements of the 1930s, and the disastrous war that resulted so frightened Western man that there was an overreaction, to the other extreme. Nationalism became a dirty word, and tolerance was promoted even to the destruction of Western civilization itself.

So here we are. To where shall we go? That is the great question. The answer will determine whether the West has a future.

“This may seem funny, but the next “Cromwell” may be a muslim.”

That’s true. The UK and Europe have committed cultural suicide — and the leftists would like for America to follow. The leftists are moronic.

The article is decent, but the comments section is priceless and a must read...

I agree wholeheartedly; I expected a lot of bashing from the lefties, but most comments were surprisingly supportive of the author's major points. I still don't know whether to laugh or cry about the following:

----------

Perhaps we should all become more christian in our approach. I don't mean that in its religious sense, no way would I advocate a return to mindless superstition, but in its social sense. Teach good honest modern social christian values, they actually are not that bad. Just keep god and all the other divine nonsense out of it. Use the golden rule as the basis for the development of a more humane society. Evangelise consideration for others as a great virtue rather than focusing on human rights.

----------

Hmmmm...divorcing moral teachings from their basis and source has proven SO successful throughout history. At least this person seems well-meaning, if completely ignorant, unlike the "progressives" who think that if we try atheistic communism just one more time it could finally work.

Great Britain is practically dead, spiritually, from a Christian perspective and that is at the heart of it's troubles.

Once a great Christian nation which spread the Gospel far and wide, it has descended into a secular cesspit, uncertain of where it is, who it is, where it is headed or even if it should head there. It should not surprise anybody the secular decline has mirrored the spiritual one. They go hand in hand.

In the meantime, a once robust Christianity is now enfeebled, almost dead, and is being supplanted by an aggressive Islamism and nobody knows how to stop it short of wringing their hands in disgust and complaining the WOGs aren't British enough. Meanwhile, the yobs continue to mindlessly smash things and vomit in the gutters. The churches continue to empty and the Gospel goes silent - except in a few small corners.

Where does one expect this will all end?

Now that is sad, sort of like a Dr telling their patient what the problem is, and how to cure it, but suggesting that the treatment is not right for them.

And that is part of the Uk’s problem, the Muslims have no such ambiguity to their world view.

And it is sad, sort of like removing the stomach and still expecting it to function.

It will end badly of course, when a driven minority is opposed by an uncaring majority, that minority will always impose it’s will.

The Gospel of Christ is a known cure for societal ills, and yet....too much Monte Python and not enough Jesus.

Liberalism destroys everthing.

Liberalism is based on the premise that man is fundamentally good, is spite of 9000 years of recorded history to the contrary.Civilization and the Social Contract is only as good as the inherent balance of rights vs obligations, and the Society's willingness to enforce the agreed on rules.

The present general chaos ain't it.

” I’ve always loved England and visited there frequently for many years, but you wouldn’t get me to go there on a bet these days.”

I feel the same way . Heck , even many Brits don’t want to be there .

I visited 6 times between 1976-1983 for a total of about 20 weeks and had a helluva good time without a hassle . Miss the pubs .

Just sit back America and do nothing, it will soon be at your back door if it isn’t already. GET OUT AND VOTE, TURN THE TIDE.

Voting is not enough. Contributing to and working on campaigns multiplies your vote many times, as we've discovered over the past two decades on involvement.

And not all candidates/politicians are crooked or dishonest, as I have learned from my time spent on campaigns and working on our issues with those elected. Yes, I've worked on the campaigns of some who've disappointed me -- but even there their opponents would have been far worse. (Even the one who turned out to be far more than a disappointment, well, his Dem successor is bad news.)

If just 10% of the FReepers in my area turned out to work on campaigns (and I don't mean relentless dedicate every evening and weekend turnout, but the occasional Saturday envelope-stuff or literature drop and election-time sign-waving), we'd swamp the libs and even the Seattle metro area might become red-state. I know many of the regular local volunteers and they're not FReepers (they may be actively online elsewhere, I do not know).

But I've heard the arguments from the do-nothings, even here on FR. They want to be FReedom's FReeloaders, letting others do all the work while they reap the benefits.

We will all pay the price for their selfishness. The country I was raised in and once loved is already no longer recognizable because too many have done, and continue to do, nothing. Take a look at They Thought They Were Free to see your future.
