Paying kids for good grades is a popular (if questionable) parenting tactic. But when school starts next week, New York City will try to use the same enticement to get parents in low-income neighborhoods more involved in their children's education and overall health. Mayor Michael Bloomberg has raised more than $40 million (much of it from his own money and the Rockefeller Foundation) to pay families a modest amount for small tasks$50 for getting a library card or $100 to take a child to the dentistthat could make a big difference.

It’s not taxpayer money NOW, but after Bloomie leaves office, and the parents/kids are hooked on the $$$, it’ll become yet another gubmint entitlement.
That’s absurd.
Sweetie, money won’t buy love.
Either they love their kids of they don’t. When you love your kids, you’re already doing this stuff.
In a secular humanist world, intrinsic motivation is nearly nil, therefore money becomes the be all and end all.
“In a secular humanist world, intrinsic motivation is nearly nil, therefore money becomes the be all and end all.”
You certainly described Bloomberg to a “t”.
FYI
There is an actual “dollars for scholars” program operational in the country. It raises $ privately within the community and awards college scholarships for various achievements. These achievementas are partially based on community involvement, academic success, etc.

Nutcase 101......no future : )
turn yer kids into a profit center!
Not money, power. Money is merely a proxy for power.
“Either they love their kids of they dont. When you love your kids, youre already doing this stuff.”
Intelligent response!
BUMP
Here we go again! Where have Bloomberg and the Rockefeller Center been hiding out for the last forty or more years? Many of us already have gotten the picture that pouring dollars upon dollars into the rescuing and rehabilitation of the "downtrodden" members of society has not solved the problems.
For obvious reasons, a large part of the black community suffers the deepest problems. While some believe that handouts in the form of welfare and affirmative action will benefit them, enough time has passed where we can see that, basically, nothing has changed. If anything, their plight, especially that of black men, has gotten worse.
I'd like to believe there is an answer, yet we will never solve the problems if we continue to believe that money is the answer.
I have a library card and have gone broke going to the dentist over the years , do I get anything ?
Just another racket.
Better than paying them SSI as an incentive to getting their kids declared “learning disabled” I suppose.
Agree!
There are so many GOBERNMENT programs for this and some are FREE so there is NO ECUSE for neglecting your kids medically.
Moeny isn’t it.
I’d hate to know how much money we have thrown at neglect.
