Angelina Jolie is in Iraq to witness firsthand the humanitarian crisis there, the United Nations Refugee Agency UNHCR has announced.
The actress and UNHCR Goodwill Ambassador, 32, flew from New York to Syria on Monday. In Damascus, she visited a UNHCR registration center and spend hours talking to Iraqi refugees in their homes.
Tuesday's journey took her to Iraq to meet with 1,200 refugees camped out in a makeshift outpost at the border, because they are unable to leave the country. She also witnessed dozens of Iraqis crossing into Syria.
"I have come to Syria and Iraq to help draw attention to the humanitarian crisis and to urge governments to increase their support for UNHCR and its partners," Jolie said in a statement. "My sole purpose in both countries is to highlight the plight of those uprooted by the war in Iraq."

such vitriol... does the article really inspire this...
she’s there to draw attention to a humanitarian crisis... there is one there... all war is such... is she protesting america’s involvement?... i admit i have no interest in the article, but what i get from the posts is so much hatred and knee jerk reaction, one would think she spit in our soldiers face...

GENEVA - Angelina Jolie visited Iraq on Tuesday to meet with refugees and U.S. troops in the country.
Jolie, who is a goodwill ambassador for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, made the visit during a two-day trip to the region, the U.N. refugee agency said Tuesday.
The statement said the 32-year-old actress met with displaced Iraqis in neighboring Syria on Monday before crossing into Iraq for a few hours Tuesday “to see firsthand the plight of hundreds of thousands of families uprooted by the ongoing conflict.”
“I have come to Syria and Iraq to help draw attention to this humanitarian crisis and to urge governments to increase their support for UNHCR and its partners,” the Geneva-based agency quoted Jolie as saying.
Jolie traveled to the Al-Waleed refugee camp on the Iraqi side of the border and spoke to some of the 1,200 Iraqis living there before visiting a contingent of U.S. troops in the area, the agency said.
Looks like it says here she’s visited some troops. I would love to see some pictures!
Where was she during the humanitarian crisis when Saddam gassed the Kurds? And why not Darfur? With Brad going to NOLA for the Katrina anniversary and Ang in Iraq, this looks like a slick liberal PR scheme to get (according to liberals) Bush’s failures back in the spotlight.
BTW, I don't suppose she'll bother visiting the Palestinian refugees while she's there? I'd really like to hear of someone checking out the conditions of the Palestinians in countries other than Israel. You know, just for comparison.
has a very recent account of his family's return from a vacation in Syria. He states that there has been an incredibly positive change in the ability to safely make this journey. Important to this thread, he says this:
"It's supply and demand 101, this change in cost reflects a change in demand on the two ends of the route suggesting that a good percentage of Iraqis who flooded Syria in the beginning of the summer season were just trying to escape the summer heat and enjoy a simple vacation, like my family did. It doesn't mean a refugees issue doesn't exist, but it does mean that Iraqis could sometimes be just normal tourists...
