We were in that area in June/July, I'm glad that didn't happen while we were there!!! Although my 6 y/o probably would have loved it! Here's a pic I took of a lovely beach north of Sydney (Newport Beach):

Uh, how could salts, fish, and seaweed be impurities? Wouldn't be much of an ocean without 'em!

Looks like that old Navy Mechanical Foam we used to use for firefighting....but I’ll be that stuff on the beach doesn’t smell as bad...

This reminds me of my time spent surfing in Ocean City, MD in the early 90’s. I remember plenty of mornings seeing the foam blow up on the beach from the Atlantic. I found it quite odd having never seen such a strange phenomena in CA. Of course the foam back then was on a much smaller scale then what the Aussies experienced.

(sigh) I sure wouldn’t mind moving back to OZ and setting up shop on one of Sydney’s northern beaches. Palm Beach would do me just fine. :)

Firefighting foam (at least the AFFF we used in the USAF) had seaweed as a key ingredient.

Looks like a giant natural protein skimmer. Used in smaller form to clean saltwater aquariums.
