Keep in mind that these new efforts to deal with illegals on the State level are coming from the same people who only months ago were telling us that they could not do anything about illegal aliens because immigration is a federal issue.
After the election, they will no doubt return to their old ways.

Arizona? Didn’t the state pass a law giving free health care to illegals a couple of years ago? Not just emergency health care, but health care for other things?

1) Federalism is a good thing. States near the Mexican border get the bulk of the negative externalities from unopposed illegal migration.
2) This is misleading. Arizona is going after employers who violate laws by hiring non-citizens. This has nothing to do with a fence (another idea I favor) and is way more effective.

"The newspaper said a study released in July forecast economic output would drop annually by at least $29 billion, or 8.2 percent, if all non-citizens, which include illegal aliens, were removed from Arizona's workforce." But of course, this IS NOT the targeted group - and of course, they know it.

A new Arizona state law to require employers to verify the immigration status of employees is being blamed and credited for chasing illegal aliens out of the state. That must be why I see new houses advertised in Phoenix for prices I saw 10 years ago. I hear that entire blocks of houses are for sale in heavily Hispanic neighborhoods.
The economic repercussions for chasing millions of people out of the country have only just begun. We may not have to listen to "press 2 for espanol" on the answering machine, but a lot of people who depended on the value of their real estate for a decent retirement may never see it.
There are *always* unintended consequences to policies, and this one will be far more expensive to far more people than many imagine.

"...interviews with immigrant advocates, community workers and real-estate agents confirm the number is significant." Ummm,
Maybe one rung above insurance salesmen, politicians, and lawyers.
Who stand on the shoulders of newspaper editors, certain anchorpersons, and the illegals themselves.
Yuppers!
That's where I'd go for solid information.
