Seeking donations, Newsom takes rich on tours of public housing
San Francisco Chronicle ^ | 8/29/7 | Heather Knight

San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom says he is leading some of the city's wealthiest residents on tours of the city's decrepit public housing developments in the hope they will donate to help rebuild them.

Newsom said Tuesday he already has taken one "very generous San Franciscan" on a tour - though he wouldn't name the person - and plans more tours to raise money to fix living conditions that shouldn't be allowed to exist in a city as affluent as San Francisco.

"I'm starting to bring tours out there of wealthy San Franciscans," he said after attending a press conference in Bayview about a new asphalt recycling system. "We're going to be doing a lot more of that ... to look how people are living in your city. For a lot of folks, it's not their fault - they just drive by, and they don't know that exists."

The news came three days after Newsom paid a visit to the Sunnydale development in Visitacion Valley to promote a back-to-school backpack giveaway. During the visit, he wound up unleashing a tirade at San Francisco Housing Authority Director Gregg Fortner and the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development after discovering that a playground at the housing complex had been vandalized.

Explaining the roots of his outrage on Tuesday, Newsom said that during the backpack giveaway, he learned that a plastic playground set that had been built by the city with money donated by the Dave Matthews Band had been burned - not once, but twice.

"I go to see something where we did try to make their lives better, and it's melted. It breaks my heart, and I'm angry - I'm angry at myself, I'm angry at HUD, I'm angry at Gregg, I'm angry at the city ...

It struggles because of all the socialist garbage that goes on.

I don’t think it’s right to “donate” to a damned PUBLIC housing project when it’s already got the government taxes going to it - and the government stink about it. Why invest in a CEO that always fails?

Yes, the People’s Republic of San Francisco just continues its Marxist-mania. What a liberal-socialist dung heap.

“unleashing a tirade at San Francisco Housing Authority Director Gregg Fortner and the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development after discovering that a playground at the housing complex had been vandalized.”

As usual - never blame the COMMON SCUM that TERRORIZE neighborhoods, but blame some other esoteric entity.

I'm picturing this as something like a mafia protection racket:

"Uhhh, ya know, dis neighborhood ... it's an eyesore, ya know? People should fix it up, capiche? Now, maybe we're gonna have to raise taxes, yaknowaddImsayin? Or, maybe you could give generously so that nuthin' bad happens to your tax rate, eh?"

Personally I think this is where they should get their money. If these socialists believe in it they should donate to it and not extort it from tax-payers.

"I'm angry at all of us."

Angry at pretty much everyone except the barbarians who burnt the playground.

The only people he is not angry at are the animals who vandalized the playground.

And here I thought his main interest was homosexual marriage. Glad to know he’s a good Democrat and shocked at the state of public housing. Did he blame it on Bush though?

But that’s the PROBLEM - if it is socialist, it is ALWAYS supported by taxpayers. Hence, why add private money to it? I say screw them. They’re trying to HIDE that government mugging & administration is a failure by adding private dollars to it.

Anyone who dosen’t like it doesn’t have to live there. It’s a free country.
I don’t live there. But then I wouldn’t fit in either there OR in the Bible Belt.

I think it would be better to close public housing. If big business wants to help, how about putting a family in a house in a middle or working class neighborhood ( just one) and help them raise their standard of living.

Sounds like that scene out of "Gangs of New York" where the wealthy New Yorkers would go "slumming" down to the Five Points and gawk at the poor Irish.

Rich liberals never change, and the lives of those they look down upon never get better until they take it upon themselves to make it better.

That's not gonna happen with all those addicts on the street in SF.

Wait a minute does RAT-run paradise SF collect no taxes? or do they just waste it and then have to ask for more “donations” to do things that the tax dollars were suposed to cover?

I too - am waiting for liberals to get angry at those who do evil. We shouldn't hold our breath waiting for them to get tough on those who break society's rules instead of repeatedly making excuses for their behavior and blaming society for making them do bad things in the first place.

San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom is a complete idiot and this tactic sounds like a Tony Soprano shakedown scheme.
