United Nations weapons inspectors discovered six to eight vials of a dangerous nerve gas, phosgene, as they were cleaning out offices at a U.N. building in New York this morning, federal authorities tell the Blotter on ABCNews.com.

The federal authorities said the office, in a U.N. building near headquarters, was being evacuated and the White House had been notified at 10 a.m.

New York police and fire officials reported to the scene around 12:15 this afternoon.

A U.N. spokesperson said a statement would be issued shortly.

Authorities said the phosgene was believed to have been discovered in Iraq and manufactured prior to 1991.

Former U.N. weapons inspectors told ABCNews.com that vials of phosgene had also been used by inspectors in Iraq to help calibrate air sampling instruments.

Could be since Blix ended up admitting he was on Saddam and Son’s side anyway.

Who knows, lots and lots and lots of enemy moles in the US.

Phoshine is for CVD, but I understand phosgene is a component of certain resists and also process cleaning byproducts. I’m often wrong, but that shouldn’t stop me from posting inane topics that seem to annoy Buff HEad.

I just heard MSNBC claim it’s not unusual for that type of chemicals to be stored in the empty building next door but it was something that had concerned the UN in the past.

It is time to evict the UN...by force if necessary. The enemy is here.

Were the vials found AT the UN Headquarters or in a building down the street from the UN? This story seems to say they were NOT found at the UN building itself.

(CBS) NEW YORK Several small vials of the nerve agent phosgene were discovered at a U.N. building in New York City Thursday morning, U.N. officials said.

Sources tell CBS 2 News that the vials were located in a building six blocks away from the landmark UN Headquarters building.

The gas was believed to have been manufactured before 1991, UN officials said in a news conference this afternoon.

The NYPD and the FBI were notified of the discovery this morning.

A UN representative said that phosgene is extremely hazardous if it is inhaled, causing the lungs to collapse.

The vials were matched to an inventory list and were unopened.

The potentially hazardous liquid substances were immediately secured.

Chemical weapons detection equipment was used to test air in the area, and no gas was detected.

Stay with CBS 2 News and wcbstv.com for the latest on this developing story.

Not that I know of, but I'm not up on the latest as I am in a backwater of the industry.

Agreed!

I don’t see why they’re scared of nerve gas. Afterall, it’s just terrorism, isn’t it?

I’m sure there’s a perfectly logical explanation for why someone had vials of nerve gas in his/her office.

Bagdad Bob: I asure you there was no nerve gas as reported, it was merely someone in the office that had nervous gas. There is nothing to see here. Move along.

That’s an understatement!

Hilarious, how desperate the MSM is to protect their precious UN and so-called “weapons inspectors”, (ie, terrorist consigliares).

It was an UNMOVIC building that they abandoned when the UN terminated the agency.

Yep, right away it was “reported” that this was left accidentally by the weapons inspectors as they were moving out of those offices.

And the just forget to destroy them.

Simple, and according to our media, just a silly mistake, not incompetence mind you, never. That word is left for only Republicans.

Some more info here:

Toxic Chemical From Iraq Found Stored In UN Office (Bloomberg)

The UN said the phosgene was recovered in 1996 from a former Iraqi chemical weapons facility, al-Muthanna. The Security Council voted on June 29 to disband the weapons agency, known as Unmovic.

I thought Iraq wasn't in the business of chemical weapons????
