Thirty-day plan for a smaller government

When Eastern Europe broke free in 1989, we all realized just how little thought had been given to the transition from socialism to capitalism. Mises had told us the collapse was coming, and we should have been prepared.

As America comes to resemble a command economy, we need a transition plan here too. Yuri Maltsev proposed a "One-Year Plan" for the U.S.S.R. We're not in that bad a shape (yet), so we could do it in 30 days.

DAY ONE: The federal income tax is abolished and April 15th is declared a national holiday. The 40% reduction in federal revenues is matched by a 40% cut in spending. The budget is still almost twice as big as Jimmy Carter's.

DAY FOUR: The minimum wage is reduced to zero, creating jobs for ex-federal bureaucrats at their market wage.

That's going to leave a mark.

Actually, I’d have a very simple suggestion. Program liberals’ word processors with a few simple phrase substitutions. Instead of “the federal government will supply $5,000,000 for...” substitute “the federal government will take $5,000,000 from productive citizens to fund...”, and likewise with other phrases implying government “largess”. Also be certain to present the government’s record at using subsidies to help select groups. Repeat such truths often enough and they’ll sink into the public consciousness.

DAY TWENTY-SEVEN: Foreign aid is outlawed as unconstitutional, unjust, and un-economic. Foreign politicians have to steal their own money. The World Bank, IMF, and United Nations close their super-luxurious doors.

Do it now.

And.....a flat tax of, preferably 10% but no more than 15%. They don’t need all that money. If they did the flat tax, they would have more money than they know what to do with. But they won’t do that. It’s not all about the money, it’s about keeping the people broke so they can’t stand up to them.

The last musician I know who dreamed and imagined was John Lennon. He dreamed of a one world secular socialist utopia in “Imagine”.

That socialist utopia would now kick him and his cigarettes out onto the curb in the name of “public health” in order to coerce him to quit a habit that displeases the state and costs them health care dollars.

I wonder what he would say about this in NYC if he were still here?
