And the claims that he a gun-grabber are not fair as the only bills he signed as Governor were NRA supported.
What does he have in mind for us that he needs to disarm us?
There are not big differences between Romney and Thompson on the issues (or in their record).
W: “There are not big differences between Romney and Thompson on the issues (or in their record).”
B: “Tell us what Mitt has said that conveys to the average person what federalism is all about?”
As Governor, he is fully aware of powers of states vs Federal govt. His health care proposal is very market-oriented and also respects the necessity and ability of states to address the matter at the state level, a dramatic departure from Democrat proposals:
- block-granting Medicaid (havent heard about block-granting to states from Repubs for years)
- not dictating one-size-fits all federal mandate on coverage
Some info on it is here:

“To realize the American Dream, we must strengthen the American people by giving them more freedom, by letting them keep more of what they earn, by making sure our schools are providing the skills our children will need for tomorrow, and by keeping America at the leading edge of innovation and technology. Freedom is at the heart of the American Dream.”
- Mitt Romney
As for Thompson, tell me again how that Thompson-supported McCain-Feingold campaign finance regulation bill respects Federalism?
So the fact that Mitt governed a state but has never uttered a peep about Federalism makes him a federalist?
Mitt sounds no different than Bush, and we know what a disaster HE turned out to be.
Fred has acknowledged the errors of the CFR result, yet Federal elections DO seems under the auspices of federal regulation, even to an ardent federalist.
“So the fact that Mitt governed a state but has never uttered a peep about Federalism makes him a federalist?”
How do you know he hasnt spoken out on the topic? You sound pretty uninformed about him generally, you should check up on his speeches more closely.
“Mitt sounds no different than Bush, and we know what a disaster HE turned out to be.”
Bush is wrong on immigration, and we’ve had political trouble due to several other factors, but Bush beats Kerry and Gore hands-down and he’s done some great things: Tax cuts, USSC appts of Roberts and Alito, has not wavered when going has gotten tough in Iraq and GWOT, etc. So let’s not fall into the beat-up-on-Bush emotionalism.
I said already that Romney is a more articulate, capable, better-on-immigration and more-fiscal-conservative version of G W Bush. We could do worse (Rudy, McCain), and we could do more conservative (Hunter, Tancredo). But for getting an electable conservative Republican standbearer who will beat Hillary, Romney could be the right man. Maybe Fred Thompson could be, but let’s see him on the campaign trail.
“Fred has acknowledged the errors of the CFR result”
I’d like to see the quote, but that’s not good enough. Conservatives like George Will and Sen Mitch McConnell predicted its bad impact and its assault on the First Amendment from the get-go. This issue was a no-brainer freedom-vs-the-social-engineers and Fred hopped on the Macainiac anti-freedom bandwagon on it.
In his 8 years in the Senate, what bill did he get passed that advanced Federalism? Did he get the Dept of Education abolished? Does he support abolishing today? Reduce mandates? Get highway funds block-granted?
What about NCLB? There is nothing ‘ardent’ about Fred’s supposed Federalism angle if he doesnt follow through on his rhetoric.
Howard Baker, Lamar Alexander and Fred Thompson go way back ... all the way to the early 1970s when FredT ran Howard Baker’s campaign. Baker and Lamar both are in the wimp-bipartisan-nice-guy wing of the Republican party. Like, say, John Warner. Mostly good, but not real conservative firebrands that advance our causes. Fred Thompson as Senator fit that mold, hence his error in joining his friend McCain on CFR.
” yet Federal elections DO seems under the auspices of federal regulation, even to an ardent federalist.”
BTW, we have had local clubs that had to deal with the long tentacles of CFR. If you have 21 races, one congressman and 20 state-local races ... CFR is invoked. So you cant mention the Federal race. Absurd. And small clubs cant afford big-shot lawyers. Maybe we should just be like the leftie bloggers and forget the laws. So ... Please, dont make excuses for that odious legislation.
Enough with the hollow rhetoric. He doesnt want to disarm you.
See:

He doesnt want to disarm you.
I won’t even call him a flip flopper if he says he was mistaken, and would veto and not sign an assault weapons ban.
Sorry, but he is a grabber of the most critical types of guns.
How do you know he hasnt spoken out on the topic (of Federalism)?
I’ll be happy to point you to my guy’s words on the subject if you’ll point me to yours.
Thanks for the reminder about this gun grabber:
Governor Romney: “I know the NRA does not support an assault weapon ban. So I don’t line up on that particular issue with the NRA, either does President Bush. He likewise says he supported an assault weapon ban.”
Thugs of a feather...
Romney could be the right man. Maybe Fred Thompson could be, but lets see him on the campaign trail.
See the references to Federalism in Mitt’s latest policy proposal:

So, big state government is all about Federalism?
Sorry, but I am unimpressed. Federalism is all about what government doesn’t do, not how to justify more socialism at the state level.
Granted the site did use the word ina complete sentence.
But Mitt on Health care sounds like Rudy on guns. Socialism on the highest level he thinks he can get away with it without reducing his own political power.
The only good thing I can say about Romney is he isn’t JulieAnnie or Juan McCainez.
Yes, They've already been doing it for years. A time article on Mormons is about as accurate as their articles with titles like "Who Was Jesus, great teacher?"
The only suprising thing is that some conservative FReepers turn off their liberal warning sirens when it comes to the MSM discussing Mormons.
Romney’s plan reduces Federal constraints on states, allowing *less* Government control at the state level. Federalism + smaller Government. Admittedly a state can use Federalism to go big-Govt direction too, but that’s not at all what Romney’s plan encourages or directs towards.
One thing we should do which I hope he’d adopt is allow people to buy insurance from any other state, so that people arent locked into the health insurance regulations for their state only.
Don’t fall for the trap that any solution to health care problems equates to ‘socialized medicine’. That just gives the issue on a silver platter to the Democrats. There are market-oriented solutions and there are socialistic solutions.

> DeMint: Romneys Health Plan Expands Freedom, Not Socialism
Columbia, SC - Today, U.S. Senator Jim DeMint (R-South Carolina) made the following statement:
Governor Romneys plan will dramatically expand access to affordable, private health insurance. By providing for full deductibility of all medical expenses, this plan will help millions of Americans who dont receive coverage through their employer to have a real choice in the individual market. It will also help equalize the tax treatment between employer-based and individual health insurance, allowing more Americans to afford a plan they can own and keep.
This plan rejects socialized medicine that leads to fewer choices, lower quality, and higher taxes. Governor Romney has outlined a sensible plan that will harness the power of free markets to provide Americans with personal control of the highest quality care at the best possible price.
