Craig leaves door open to remain in Senate
Idaho Statesman ^ | Sept 5, 2007 | Erika Bolstad and Gregory Hahn

Posted on 09/05/2007 7:42:05 AM PDT by Jeff Head

Craig chose his words carefully during his resignation speech Saturday in Boise, according to a voice mail message he mistakenly left on a stranger's phone.

In that message obtained by the Capitol Hill newspaper Roll Call, Craig tells a man named "Billy" that his choice of language is deliberate because it leaves the door open for him to stay in office.

Craig made the call just minutes before his speech.

"We have reshaped my statement a little bit to say it is my intent to resign on Sept. 30," Craig said. "I think it is important for you to make as bold a statement as you are comfortable with this afternoon, and I would hope you could make it in front of the cameras. I think it would help drive the story that I'm willing to fight, that I've got quality people out there fighting in my defense, and that this thing could take a new turn or a new shape; it has that potential."

He said Sen. Arlen Specter, R-Pa., had encouraged him to fight.

The recording was offered for sale to the Idaho Statesman, which turned it down because the newspaper's ethics policy precludes it from paying for information from sources. A Roll Call editor said that publication wouldn't pay either, but it managed to obtain the recording without charge.

The voice is indeed Craig's, spokesman Dan Whiting said. Whiting would not say who "Billy" is. On Saturday, Craig announced that he had hired high-profile criminal defense lawyer Billy Martin to help him unravel the guilty plea he filed last month.

Craig, IMHO, needs to resign quietly and go away. He is going to create a spectacle that will not be good for himself, his family, the State of Idaho, or the nation.

He pled guilty...the guilty plea he signed states very clearly that that DA does not take guilty pleas from people who "think" they are innocent and have done nothing wrong. He signed it.

That's enough. Let the Governor appoint another conservative to fill out the term and not risk the seat.

With more friends like Arlen Specter, the GOP might as well write off the next election right now.

Sounds like it. I live in Idaho and have corresponded on numerous occassions with Craig's office.

Most here feel he should step aside over what, at the best, are these embarassing and very ill thought out judgements and actions. He is creating a spectacle and all his talk about "the good of the state" rings hollow.

The concervative governor here will appoint a string conservative to fill out the term who would then easily win re-election in this state. I am not sure at all Craig can (or should) be re-elected after this.

"He said Sen. Arlen Specter, R-Pa., had encouraged him to fight.

At this point he's trying to defend the indefensible. Give it up and resign before you hurt the party even worse than you have already gay boy.

You know...if he wants to get a lawyer and try to extract himself legally from the mess he has made...fine. But do so outside of the elcected representative mantle. This episode has shown such ill judgement (at the best) that most here simply do not want him representing them.

Either he was guilty as he pled and signed a sworn statement to that effect, or he lied simply to "make it go away", which he also mow says.

If I take him at his latest word and he did lie, then I have to ask myself (as are many OIdahoans), "What else will he lie about to just, "make it go away"?

Interesting that is was Arlen Specter who came to Craig's defense...

Now why would you do a thing like that, Arlen...?

This incident makes the entire episode look even more ridiculous, as if Craig is pretty hapless and not too aware of what he’s doing. But it happens. I use the generic response for my voice mail, and it’s surprising how many wrong number callers leaver me a message.

Until It’s Time for You to Go
Elvis Presley
(words & music by Buffy Sainte-Marie)

You’re not a dream
You’re not an angel
You’re a woman
I’m not a king,
I’m a man,
Take my hand
We’ll make a space
In the lives that we planned
And here we’ll stay
Until it’s time for you to go
Yes, we’re diff’rent worlds apart
We’re not the same
We laughed and played
At the start like in a game
You could have stayed
Outside my heart
But in you came
And here you’ll stay
Until it’s time for you to go
Don’t ask why,
Don’t ask how
Don’t ask forever,
Love me now
This love of mine
Had no beginning
It has no end
I was an oak,
Now I’m a willow
Now I can bend
And tho’ I’ll never
In my life see you again
I still stay
Until it’s time for you to go

It goes back to that timeless question, “How do you know when a politician is lying?”.....his lips are moving.

‘He said Sen. Arlen Specter, R-Pa., had encouraged him to fight.’

Another example of Arlen Specter being and complete and total IDIOT.

As if we needed confirmation of that...wish the Whitehouse had realized he’s more trouble than he’s worth.

I think it would help drive the story that I'm willing to fight...

I think Craig would be making a McGrievous error.

Yeah, makes one wonder if Arlen has a "wide stance".

So let me get this straight. The senator dials a wrong number and leaves a voice mail recording right before he gives his resignation speech. The low-life opportunist morons he calls by mistake, go public with the recording and offer it for sale... going public i don’t give a rats ass about, but offering it for SALE?

What astounds me, is after all those years in congress, Craig did not know that he was immune to arrest.

Has anybody in Congress read the dang Constitution?

So Arlen Sphincter was in on this?

No wonder he was flaking for Senator Pervert on Meet The Depressed this Sunday.

This may put Arlen in a tight spot.

You mean a Republican is going to stand up and fight? I’ll believe this when I see it.
