BERLIN, Sept. 5 (UPI) -- A German military drone designed to help secure Afghanistan has so far turned out to be a catastrophic failure.
The unmanned German reconnaissance drone, called KZO, has repeatedly crashed during test flights and revealed other technical glitches, German news magazine Der Spiegel reported in its latest issue.
The KZO was supposed to help secure the German Air Base in Mazar-i-Sharif in Afghanistan, from where a squadron of six Panavia Tornado jets launches reconnaissance missions.
The KZO started as a German-French military project more than two decades ago, consumed nearly $700 million in development costs and has since run into severe problems, the magazine said. Germany has run the KZO alone for a few years, but the military after the unsuccessful tests has so far stopped the drone from being deployed to Afghanistan.
If it works, the KZO is able to stay in the air for 3.5 hours and with its infrared camera shoot crystal-clear images from a distance of roughly 40 miles.
They need to get Heinrich Dorfmann on it!!!
“If those damn yanks didn’t steal all of our good engineers in ‘45, we wouldn’t even have this problem.” Merkel said. “Now we may have to exceed our defense budget which is capped at $50 per year.”
LOL
Every German sailplane designer who sees this picture is going to throw up......
“They need to get Heinrich Dorfmann on it!!!”
You beat me to it.
The German (Hardy Kruger?) did turned in a fine performance in that film.
Probably downed too much Dunkelbrau before the test....
