I want to comment further here on the Miss Teen South Carolina answer. She was asked a question in a pageant: "Recent polls have shown a fifth of Americans can't locate the United States on a world map. Why do you think this is? " Here was her answer: "I personally believe the US Americans are unable to do so because some people out there in our nation don't have maps, and, uh, I believe that our education, like such as South Africa and, uh, the Iraq, everywhere like, such as -- and I believe that they should. Our education over here in the US should help the US -- should help South Africa and should help the Iraq, and the Asian countries, so we will be able to build up our future for our children." Now, this is sad. This is sad, and people played this audio all over. It's over ten million hits on YouTube, Mr. Snerdley. You've got the audio? (sigh) Okay, I'll play it, but I'm not doing this to make fun of her. A lot of people did this. I'm not trying to make fun of her. There's a reason for this. There is an explanation for this answer.

OH, PUllllleeeaaaassseee.....sheesh....what a pile..."
I hope you realize that was sarcasm.
Relax, mom. It was sarcasm.
No....not until later when the writer told me so.....my sarc radar wasn’t working well this pm...
[Applause]
Now that I see her answer in written form, I now understand what she was trying to say or what she was going for.
Who would have thought she needed a sarcasm tag for that statement? The sarcasm couldn’t be any more blatantly obvious.
We’re discussing the lack of education of our teens and the young woman’s lack of intelligence? It seems some of those very same traits could be said of others around here.
Don't expect Americans to pander to this idiocy and buy into your vain attempt to lionize this girl and don't you DARE try to claim that this is a non-issue.
Don't let the door hit ya where the good Lord split ya.
They probably have road signs in Mexico pointing the way, saying things like "Ciudad Juarez: 130 miles." If the illegal immigrants can't read, a sign with an arrow and a picture of Uncle Sam will do.
I’m amazed at how many people took your first post as that was your opinion. I thought it was obvious you were talking about the people you debated online but oh well.
My oldest gave a highly entertaining presentation to her Venture Crew on kayaking. She did a good job, although she's a shy kid. It helps if you know the subject well -- you can always craft an answer out of your knowledge.
Back when I was a courtroom lawyer, a lot of us joined Toastmasters to get feedback on our speaking styles and improve our ability to think on our feet.
It is VERY effective training.
Is there a United States of Mexico? Brazil? Any other country in North, South or Central America that has the word "America" in it? No.
So consider yourself mean and arrogant if you wish, the rest of us will continue calling ourselves Americans because it's part of the name of our country.
Hey Valpal. I’m getting my Masters in Education and I’ll tell ya, it’s tough to sit in class while various profs attempt to school me in diversity and gender bias.
In class the other night, my prof. began his lecture by asking “What makes a great teacher?” The answers ranged from “sensitivity” to “kindness.” The prof. was eating it all up with a spoon. I thought I was going to scream. Instead, I raised my hand and said I believed strong classroom management skills and knowledge of the subject matter they were teaching made for a great teacher...the silence was deafening.
I guess what I’m trying to say here is that OF COURSE teachers should be kind to their students and respectful of their students and sensitive to the needs of their students. But in this day and age sensitivity trumps actual teaching, and the result is that pretty young girl who is just dumb as a stump.
BTW, great tag line!
ROFLMBO!!! Poor kid must have been mortified after she realized what she said later. Some don’t think well at the spur of the moment. (I was going to say “on their feet”... but that would give more fodder to the blonde jokes) :)
“This is a non-issue.
She is a kid who did better under scrutiny than most kids her age.
She needs our kindness. Leave her alone. Her critics have been so cruel”
She’s 18 and had a brain freeze while speaking in public. It’s easy to make fun of her, but people should back off.
Yes I messed up my statement. I am so deeply sorry that you had to come across such stupidity.
So what’s an appropriate answer to such an inane question...that won’t get you bounced out on your ear?
