I want to comment further here on the Miss Teen South Carolina answer. She was asked a question in a pageant: "Recent polls have shown a fifth of Americans can't locate the United States on a world map. Why do you think this is? " Here was her answer: "I personally believe the US Americans are unable to do so because some people out there in our nation don't have maps, and, uh, I believe that our education, like such as South Africa and, uh, the Iraq, everywhere like, such as -- and I believe that they should. Our education over here in the US should help the US -- should help South Africa and should help the Iraq, and the Asian countries, so we will be able to build up our future for our children." Now, this is sad. This is sad, and people played this audio all over. It's over ten million hits on YouTube, Mr. Snerdley. You've got the audio? (sigh) Okay, I'll play it, but I'm not doing this to make fun of her. A lot of people did this. I'm not trying to make fun of her. There's a reason for this. There is an explanation for this answer.

This is a non-issue.
She is a kid who did better under scrutiny than most kids her age.
She needs our kindness. Leave her alone. Her critics have been so cruel.
One fifth of Americans? Lower than I expected but I’m sure that’s because the older people got an education in school. I suspect a lot more than one fifth of more recent high school graduates are as dumb as Miss Teen South Carolina. Her excuse, of course, is that she has been well indoctrinated in politically correct dogma without being exposed to an education.
I have had the argument with several online people about whether Americans are right to call themselves Americans. Her use of “U.S. Americans” has been widely criticized, but that part of her answer was poltiically correct. We are apparently very arrogant to call ourselves Americans when there are other courntries in North and South America who also have a claim to the name American. Nevermind that Canadians like to be called Canadians and Mexicans are fine with Mexicans, etc. And never mind that “United States-an” doesn’t really work. We use the title “American” to be mean and arrogant, apparently.
I’ve heard dumber statements out of Democrats in Congress.

Yes indeed; do not hold her accountable for her inarticulate, uninformed answer to a simple question posed during a SCHOLARSHIP CONTEST, AKA meat-pageant. This was not some pop-question, man-on-the-street/Jay-Walking ambush.
Still, I guess it is eeeevil, mean-spirited, cruel (AND unusual) to expect accountability and performance, if it means bruising her unearned and seeminly unjustified self esteem.
We don't know anything except the way to the mall, how to us an ipod and vote Democrat. Our schools have been successful, given their mission. Perhaps teaching Ebonics would be a step up. At least they could practice that while listening to their rap music.
At least I can say my daughter and her friends are better off. They are finishing college, working or in the service. However, when I showed the video to my daughter, she said, "Oh my gawd, that is just like [name deleted]!"
Geez when I was a kid they handed out tracing paper and cool coloring pencils and told us to make maps. Maps of states, regions, continents, the town, the playground, treasure maps, pirate maps, maps of the moon, maps of imaginary places.
I still know where stuff is (although some names have changed) and still know how to read a map.
And it was loads of fun, sigh. Schools are prisoner re-education camps now.

While the public schools were bad when I was in them, something like this was very rare. Apparently, it’s not all that rare anymore.
I suspect she will do just fine as long as she has “walking around sense”.

You are an American idiot. You have grown up in a society that allows you to be who you are . Did you ever have a real job? I mean a job where you actually have to lift something from one place to another. I worked in a quarry. I bagged lime 10 hours every day. Kiss my grits.
I'm sure Miss South Carolina appreciates your effort to take some of the attention away from her and onto yourself...
