Former Tennessee Sen. Fred Thompson was set to officially announce his long-expected Republican presidential bid in a 15-minute Webcast at 12:01 a.m. EDT on Thursday, timed to coincide with a visit to "The Tonight Show."
The unprecedented move is part of an unconventional campaign style that quickly moved Thompson to the front ranks of GOP contenders with little effort.
But in recent months, many grass-roots conservatives have soured on the strategy and the candidate. Once viewed as a GOP savior, many now question Thompson's grit and determination.

Good grief!
This whole electorial mess shouldn’t even START for another YEAR!
Oh puh_leeez. Fred just announced last night, and they are already declaring him dead. What a joke. Fred is much much closer to Rudy than the second place Obama is to Hillary.
I know. People lose interest
The BUZZ sounds like a chain saw this morning. IBD smoking hildeweed! Who do you REALLY support???
LLS
That FT *Max Headroom* ad before the debates was horrible. Couldn’t concentrate on what he was saying and watch him at the same time.
Give it a rest. The numbers are through the roof already after Fred’s Announcement and the money is pouring in...go throw up somewhere else. Thanks so much.
The worst part is all of the stories about nothing.
Fred Thompson blah,blah,blah....
I’d love to have the Fred Thread concession here.
Over 1 million served!
We now have a Conservative Candidate that “everyone” including Moderate to Conservative Democrats can and will support. They’ll have a reason to vote in 2008.
FRED THOMPSON 2008!!!!!
The first primary is a few months away. Another year might be a little late to start. :)
Has __fill in the blank__ waited too late to declare for the 2012 Presidential election?
I suspect Fred will begin doing better, not worse now that he is going to be campaigning in Iowa and New Hampshire personally.
I think Fred should have announced when it would have been exciting rather than anti-climactic, in hindsight. That said, his strategy has put him second in the race in the polls right now so it can’t be condemned. I didn’t like the Tonight Show announcement, or that he didn’t do it the day BEFORE the New Hampshire debate (with the hard work of debate prep that would have required). But to say that his campaign is over or has lost steam is silly.
I support Duncan Hunter because he seems like the only rock solid conservative in the race and I’ve never seen him misstep in a speech or an interview . . . which is pretty amazing. Duncan Hunter knows who he is, what he believes and what he is talking about. That said, Fred’s my favorite other than Hunter at this point and attacking him for announcing a month too late when the “waiting” strategy has worked for him and got a lot press is silly. Kind of like me, an average sized guy and an average athlete, kibbitzing a Joe Montana for one bad play early in a game. Maybe true, but missing the point that he’s a great player that has done practically everything right.
I want a hotdog w/mustard, a mango slurpy, and an informed electorate with a superfluity of wisdom. Oh, and I will need some napkins, heh. :)
What a biased title and article.
As with any candidate, Thompson should be evaluated based on his positions, his track record, his electability, and his character.
People who don’t like Fred don’t even have to bother speaking up about it anymore. He’s destroying himself through arrogance and incompetence IMHO.
I think it will come down to Duncan Hunter or Fred and we have a lot of time to decide.
Poor Saundra. Deluded.
