Federal immigration officials placed detainers on 52 people at the Costa Mesa jail in August, the same number as in July, officials said. Detainers are placed on suspected illegal immigrants, who are booked at the jail on suspicion of other offenses.
A federal agent has been checking the immigration status of people booked at the jail since December. So far, immigration officials have identified a total of 425 people they believe are in the U.S. illegally, including the August total.
The July and August numbers are the second-highest monthly totals since the program began.

If that is in a single prison (sounds like it is) and if they are doing this in every prison in the USA (sounds like they aren’t since the aggregate number isn’t reported) and if they are actually going to deport the illegals they identify (not guaranteed) this is a good thing and good numbers from a single prison. A single guy assigned to a prison with clerical and research support could go through an entire prison population in a reasonable time, and then go to other duties with only new entrants being checked for citizenship.
This stuff is so simple to do. Our government is like a giant, bloated, imbecile . . . Can’t we get a government that is like a persnickity clerk instead? It would be an improvement.

Costa Mesa is a city in Orange County, CA, with a population of approximately 113,400.
The Orange County Sheriff has an arrangement with ICE where some of his deputies are trained to perform immigration checks, as do Los Angeles, San Bernardino and Riverside counties, where deputies have been trained to use federal databases to check a local jail inmate's immigration status.
Costa Mesa had originally planned to train city officers (with much wringing of hands by local "activists") prior to ICE stepping up to put one of their own at the city jail.
The (OC) County's numbers are much higher.
The OC Sheriff - Cross-Designation/Immigration page offers this:
"For the record, from January 19 to July 29, Orange County Sheriff’s Department Jail Deputies interviewed 4,135 foreign nationals booked into Orange County jails, detaining 2,778 individuals for Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Among those detained, 180 were being held for aggravated felonies, 1,762 for felonies, 1,016 for misdemeanors and 174 affiliated with gangs."

Nice. Does ICE actually deport these guys though? I’ve read/heard that they don’t actually do anything with the reports.
Ultimately, we need leaders at all levels of government with the will to perform their jobs and the integrity to abide by their oath of office.
