Assembly Speaker Joseph Roberts says he was "absolutely sickened" by the news that two assemblymen were arrested today on federal bribery charges. Gov. Jon Corzine called the allegations "beyond disturbing."
They and other Democratic leaders withheld judgment on the charges against Assemblymen Mims Hackett Jr. (D-Essex) and Alfred Steele (D-Passaic), while saying corruption cannot be tolerated. Republicans said the charges show the party in power hasn't done enough to reform state government.
"This is another sad day for the people of New Jersey," Assembly Minority Leader Alex DeCroce (R-Morris) said.
Assemblyman Bill Baroni (R-Mercer) praised U.S. Attorney Christopher Christie - a Republican seen as a potential gubernatorial candidate - for going after public corruption.
"There are two things New Jersey needs in the fight against corruption -- tougher anti-corruption laws and enforcement of the laws," Baroni said. "Chris Christie is doing incredible work enforcing the laws..."
At the Statehouse, Steele, an ordained minister, may be best known for stepping in to deliver the invocation before late-night budget sessions. He holds the ceremonial title of deputy speaker. Hackett chairs the State Government Committee, which handles ethics legislation.
Neither lawmaker had any comment today, and there was no immediate word on whether they would remain in the Assembly and continue their re-election campaigns. However at least one party official in Essex and Passaic counties said Democratic leaders were expecting both to resign. The sources spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the behind-the-scenes maneuvering.

Hahahahhahaha “beyond disturbing”. Get ready folks, NJ is about to have a whole slew of new Gay politicians.
The corruption in the NJ beach communities in the seventies was breathtaking.
And this was BEFORE Atlantic City got back the casinos.
What is amusing to me is they pretend to be surprised. Not that Democrats have the market cornered on corruption they are just proud pigs where as corrupt Republicans at least show a bit of shame when caught.
Is it perhaps because he hears the pitter-patter of little feet heading his way?
hmmm, new jersey, democrat machine, crime and corruption, yeah, that sounz about ryte.
NOTHING puts the New Jersey rat on the defensive, nothing. And nothing will come from this, except a few local rats will go to prison. The worst one I know of here is Sammy Rivera, not because of what they have him for now, but for his past. I don’t know if the New Jersey ratmedia will report this, but Rivera was convicted of a felony when he was a young police officer in Puerto Rico. That would have disqualified him from taking office, even in New Jersey. Nevertheless, being a democrat prison camp, New Jersey gave Sammy a pass and allowed him to take office anyway. after all his conviction showed he was a man they could “work with.”
No, there will be other Riveras. They are printing up their fraudulent ballots right now waiting for the special elections. Nothing changes in the most corrupt state in the union: Never ever.
The writer also slyly got a dig in that one of them Dems like to pretend to be religious and the other would oversee Ethics legislation, heh. Typical dems...
