Report: Exonerated Duke Lacrosse Players Seek $30 Million Settlement

RALEIGH, N.C. — Attorneys for the three players falsely accused in the Duke University lacrosse rape case are seeking a settlement of about $30 million and several changes to the state's legal process, a person close to the case said early Friday.

If the terms aren't met, the players' attorneys will file a civil rights lawsuit against the city of Durham early next month, said the source, who requested anonymity because not all of the details of the proposed settlement had been worked out.

During a discussion Wednesday with Durham officials, players' attorneys Brendan Sullivan and Barry Scheck, stressed that the money they are seeking — about $10 million each for David Evans, Collin Finnerty and Reade Seligmann over five years — must be accompanied by the legal reforms, the source said.

On Thursday, City Attorney Henry Blinder and City Manager Patrick Baker briefed elected officials on the settlement discussions, according to The Herald-Sun of Durham, which first reported on the settlement demands. The city has a $5 million liability insurance policy with a $500,000 deductible, the paper reported.

Hope the college suit is separate and 10X's as much.

We need to protect our children from persecution such as this kids endured, no matter how stupid they were initially. They were innocent of rape.

$10 million each seems a little steep...

All their legal fees should be covered along with reasonable damages.

Reasonable to me is about what they're asking for.

Duke needs to feel the sting of poverty for awhile.

I’m for suing the college for all they can get. They were malicious.

Not the city. The taxpayers didn’t do this to these kids. The city should cover attorneys fees and reasonable damages.

Duke is the college correct?

I have no problem with that.

The taxpayers don’t deserve it though.

The taxpayers re-elected Nifong *specifically* because of this case.

Yes, the taxpayers DO need to pay for bad judgment.

"I’m for suing the college for all they can get. They were malicious."

The families of the three accused players have already settled with Duke - and that settlement covered the feckless President and the 88 imbeciles.. There was no public mention of the size of the settlement.

"Not the city. The taxpayers didn’t do this to these kids. The city should cover attorneys fees and reasonable damages."

I disagree - the city should be bled white for their role.
It was the CITY Police Department that behaved as a kangaroo court.
It was the citizens of Durham who reelected Nifong on his PROMISE to prosecute the boys -- based ONLY on their black racist hatred for "whitey"..

It was the Police Chief of Durham, who was absent and uninvolved in the highest profile case in Durhams history - totally inept and incompetent asshole who allowed his Police Department to be used as outlaw organization to get Nifong reelected.

Durham should be bled white --- bankrupted to the point they can no longer provide any city services to the ignorant racist bastards who live there.

After the city has been dealt with, they should go forward against the State for delaying so long their reining in of an outlaw renegade District Atty....

------------
Even though the family of the "Three" have settled with DUKE, which included protection for the President and the "88" faculty assholes -- the families of the OTHER Lacrosse players can still sue DUKE, the President and the "88" for the discrimination they wrongly suffered at their hands...

Ah, the other shoe drops. I’ve been waiting for the Duke lawsuits to begin. Yes, the school should settle quickly, and the city should too. Every city has insurance and/or funds to cover lawsuits for official misbehavior.

Our city is regularly sued by property owners who fight back against land grabs and ridiculous environmental regulations (”You had a puddle in your yard for two months, therefore your yard is a “wetland” and you cannot build a gazebo on it.) The city loses every single suit, pays out millions, yet it continues with the enviro-idiocy. Until, of course, new officials are elected.

They should have also brought action against the extremist faculty signers of the newspaper ad. Those stupid left wing professors should also feel the consequences of their actions. The boys were libeled and convicted by them before any evidence was presented. Amen

I think the argument could be made that Nifong was a race baiter who used the case to inflate his profile in an election campaign that ran while the case was active.

The taxpayers elected him in that election.

After this 30 Million dollar lesson, perhaps the taxpayers will be more circumspect of whom they elect.

Absolutely right! I would go after the liar, extortionist, and racist woman, too. I wouldn’t let her to ‘dance away’ from this one in order to do it again to someone else.

I think they are "reaching" now.....and sound to be simply money grabbing ...

the point has been made....they could have asked for a token amount PLUS the legal changes in NC that would help the next suckers that get in this situation....

It was the taxpayers of Durham who re-elected the disgraced Nifong based on his illegal conduct and pandering to the electorate, the taxpayers who foot the bills for their Keystone Kops Police Department, and the entire city should be made an example of, and made to pay and pay dearly.

If I had my way, the city would end up being renamed 'Evans-Finnerty' and Duke should be renamed 'Seligmann College' so that future generations will never forget the miscarriage of justice that was perpetrated upon three students innocent of ANY crime.

I’ll concede to that if enough information was available when he was reelected to know better.

I don’t remember when his reelection was relative to the arrest. The police report about both stripper’s activities after the “event” came out pretty soon after the arrest and that’s when it was pretty obvious that something was seriously wrong with the claims. When was that relative to his reelection?

The faux ‘rape’ occurred (in Nifong’s fantasy world) on March 13, 2006.

Nifong wins the Democrat primary on May 2, 2006.

Nifong wins re-election on Nov 7, 2006.

Conclusion: Nifong jumped on the back of Crystal Gail Mangum, yelled ‘giddy-up!’ to another 4 year term as DA, and didn’t even pay her for the ride.
