Hmmmm, let's see, scientific test results or a politician...what to believe... Well now that I look at it it's an anonymous UN Official who announced that it was a "a non-toxic solvent" instead of phosgene.
Although I heard reports that it was suspended in oil, a remarkable step for turpentine or something.
So then the question becomes:
let's see, anonymous UN spokesman or a politician...what to believe.
A more difficult choice.

According to
this story:
The material identified in inventory files as phosgene, a chemical substance used in World War I weapons was discovered Aug. 24. It was only identified on Wednesday because it was marked simply with an inventory number, and officials had to check the many records in their vast archives, said Ewen Buchanan, a spokesman for the U.N. inspection agency."
The "phosgene" tag got put on it only by paperwork, not by looking at the contents.
Again, this is from AP, not like a reliable source.

Do you have a link to where they said it was what?Link
At least this one is attributed:
Tests at a military facility in Maryland identified the substance as a nontoxic commercial solvent, said Paul J. Brown, deputy commissioner of the New York City Police Department.
Then again, it's CNN, so youse takes youse chances...

Phosgene is a blister agent, not a nerve agent. Actually it's a choking agent.

Apparently it's a publicity agent.

I’d like to know just what solvent it was!
Also, how in the world did it get labeled as Mustard Gas!

how in the world did it get labeled as Mustard Gas! Did you read what I posted in #43?
It never was labeled as phosgene, it was labeled as 532-6685321B or something, and a paper somewhere said that 532-6685321B = Phosgene.
So somewhere there's a vial numbered 532-6685321C that REALLY IS phosgene, for all I know.
Gives you great confidence in the UN inspections process, doesn't it?

Reading my post #48 again, it reads as if I was chiding you; I did not mean that at all.
I should have said "Did you notice what I posted..."

Ridiculous article. For Saddam to have WMD means he has nukes or massive stores of nerve gas and biologicals. We didn’t find anything like this, though I don’t rule out them being moved to Syria or buried in Iraq

Anthrax doesn’t need to be in tons to be lethal.
But what about a few hundred gallons of say....dimethyl sulfate?

I am well aware of what your citation says but note that they also call VX a gas when it is normally a liquid. Even mixed so that it is in a vapor it is still not a ‘gas’ but a vapor.
But if you can google that, you can google dms to see if that meets your threshold for wmd.
Then go get me a few milligrams of water while you’re at it.

Ridiculous article. For Saddam to have WMD means he has nukes or massive stores of nerve gas and biologicals. We didnt find anything like this, though I dont rule out them being moved to Syria or buried in Iraq Actually the only relevant consideration was his obligation to prove to us that he destroyed his WMDs, failing in that, he was armed and we were justified in acting accordingly.
