A Michigan woman pleaded guilty yesterday at the federal courthouse in Washington to conspiring to smuggle Iraqi and Jordanian migrants into the United States for financial gain, Justice Department and Homeland Security officials announced.
Neeran H. Zaia, 56, of Sterling Heights pleaded guilty to one conspiracy charge and seven counts of alien smuggling before Judge Rosemary Collyer.
Zaia admitted that between 2001 and 2004 she accepted money from Iraqi and Jordanian migrants to help transport them to South America, where she coordinated arrangements with other smugglers who attempted to bring or brought the migrants into the United States.
