You may be used to seeing his name on both the silver screen and the small screen. Now Fred Thompson is hoping you'll see it on the ballot during the next presidential election.
The veteran actor and former Tennessee senator announced his candidacy last Thursday...months later than his rivals. Today, the republican made his first appearance in Cedar Rapids.
Thompson might be the man of the hour today in Cedar Rapids but he and the other candidates have a lot of work to do to gain the support of Iowans. Marie Vanourny says, "At the moment, I'm gathering more information on both sides."
But now, they've got another option on the Republican side, only he hit the campaign trail far later than his rivals. Thompson says, "It's really not late by historical standards, everyone else just got in early.
And voters seem to think his strategy is smart. Vanourny adds, "I think he is probably smart for doing that. He's got a lot of publicity and he hasn't spent a lot of money yet."
But jumping into the race for the White House wasn't an easy decision for Thompson. He says, "It has not been my personal goal to hold this office. I just feel like it's time that I stepped up and that I have something to offer the country if the country can use me."
So far, he's got some fans. Republican Virginia Bailey says, "I like the way he communicates, actually the way he speaks, and I like the friendly manner in which he speaks."
He credits years in front of the camera for some of that polish but insists this run for the White House is nothing like his acting career. He says, "It's the difference between unreal and real and this is real."
Here's where Fred Thompson stands on the issues:
On Iraq, Thompson says that backing out now would show that our country is weak and that Americans are not united.
On healthcare, he dismisses the idea of universal healthcare. Instead, he proposes an open marketplace situation that would provide individual freedom and competition to drive down prices.
On immigration, he is in favor of securing our borders and opposes amnesty in any form.
And finally, on gay marriage, he supports a constitutional amendment that would prohibit judges from overturning state laws prohibiting same-sex marriage.
Anyone who is "gathering more information on both sides" isn't a republican, IMO.
I want someone who hasn't been dreaming and scheming about being president since he or she was in college.Hell, Harry S. Truman never even went to college.
I’m with you on that!
Another observation:
Somebody needs to clue the GOP & Fred Thompson in about Hillary ordering the Mini-Series ‘Path To 9/11’ banned from sale to Americans.
Fred Thompson reporting this to the public as censorship by a presidential candidate could turn it into a campaign asset against Hillary...
That would sound pretty loony.
The smart move might be to have a third party (say newsbusters.org) talk about it, so it doesn’t look quite so partisan as it would coming from a campaign. Do you have a link?
The last good dem prez maybe, but even JFK was a godsend compared to today's traitors.
And don't forget ol Zell Miller, the way he ripped up sissy chrissy matthews at the 04 GOP convention was a sight I will never forget.....God bless him!
Why does that sound “loony”?
We’re in the fight for our lives in ‘08. The way things are going in this nation, this could very well be our last shot at the White House. By 2012, all the illegal Mexicans, gays, Welfare Queens and crack ho’s will be voting enmasse.
Zell Miller needs to endorse and go out on the stump with Fred Thompson. That would be a heckuva campaign event.
I wonder if the two are even friends?
“Somebody needs to clue the GOP & Fred Thompson in about Hillary ordering the Mini-Series Path To 9/11 banned from sale to Americans.”
LOL ... I taped “Path to 9/11” and put it on a personal DVD.
We could put it out on BitTorrent if we need to bypass the HillaryCensorPolice.... we can call it AmericanSamizdat.
Zell said early in the year he was watching for his friend Fred to join the race. I don’t think an endorsement is out of the question, but I think Zell is not going to be campaigning.
He’s nearly 76.
Yup, that could put a damper on things. But Zell has lots of grandkids and cares much about their future and knows that Herr Shrillary would be a disaster. We may just see ol Zell on the campaign trail yet. In any case, an endorsement from Zell would be great for Fred!

Blog post from June 28:
“...longtime Thompson friend and King of Georgia Zell Miller said recently although he wont be active... hes waiting to see if two old friends - Tennesseean Fred Thompson and/or former House Speaker Newt Gingrich - get into the Republican race.”

It sounds loony as in “crackpot conspiracy theory” loony. Loony as in “George H.W. Bush is trying to ruin my daughter’s wedding and call her a lesbian” loony.
You run a campaign on Hillary Clinton trying to keep Americans from buying a made for TV movie on DVD and you will ensure we lose the White House until at least 2012.
(BTW, gays can already vote.)
Truman is overrated.
JFK is overrated too.
All the Democrats after Grover Cleveland have been overrated by historians.

I think the comparison to Democrats today is valid though. These two were pretty dang good in comparison.
Yes. In comparison. *In comparison*, hives is much more pleasant than leprosy.
lol. So true.
Thanks, I did not know that.
Even at 76, I think Zell has some zip left in him.
This is the “lazy” old guy? I’m exhausted just LOOKING at all those pictures!
And that’s the “trophy wife” (read “bimbo’)!? WOW! She looks like the logical successor to our current intelligent, gracious, classy First Lady to me. What a family for the White House!
I was thrilled with his message alone - but the whole package is a winner for our nation. I’m coming out of political activism retirement for this family. Let’s roll!
