Hastert Departure Coincides With Unsettled Future for House Republicans
FOX NEWS ^ | September 09, 2007 | Kelley Beaucar Vlahos

WASHINGTON — Dennis Hastert's walk off the political stage may be a footnote in history but it also marks the end of a career that is notable for its leadership as the longest-Republican House speakership ever during a tumultuous era in Washington horse-trading.

Nearly lost in the buzz of recent scandal and resignation, Hastert's expected departure is the culmination of a bad year for House Republicans, who lost the majority in the 2006 midterm elections and whose prospects remain unclear following the unexpected death of Ohio Rep. Paul Gillmor this week and retirement decisions by an array of former party luminaries and Hastert cronies.

The future remains uncertain for the GOP he leaves behind. Hastert's plan to step down precedes the end of the Bush administration but was seemingly lost in the resignation announcements by White House chief political strategist Karl Rove and Attorney General Alberto Gonzales. Much of the attention to party matters has been focused on the stink caused by guilty-pleading Idaho Sen. Larry Craig and the perfunctory selection of a nominee for the 2008 presidential race.

More predictions of doom and gloom for the GOP, not to mention most of those people she mentions aren't in the House.

I'm glad Hastert's going myself, he's too lowkey IMO. But it's hard to believe that things can get any worse in the House of Representatives than they are right now under Speaker Pelosi.

For some reason I could never put my finger on, I never had much faith in this guy.

Well, to start with, he's a Republican politician. There are some real tigers in the bunch, but they're an endangered species.

Hastert jumped the shark when he protested the FBI raid on Rep. W. Jefferson’s (D-Louisiana) DC office. Why do these people forget, after they get to Washington, that they are accountable to the people of this country?

Hilarious. An AP reporter talking about Republicans. "They're so doomed, mired in scandal, and otherwise bewildering. They have no future and don't even know it."

This is what passes for "news" in this country.

Hastert was a “Jerry Ford” - a mediocre, phlegmatic, dull-witted politician who was put into power in the wake of the Gingrich/Livingston scandals, who was chosen by power-brokers because he was acceptable and non-threatening to democrats and the press.

What a bunch of malarky. If any of you knew what you were talking about, you might be dangerous.

Hastert, Lott and the rest of their kind of RINO leadership is what got the GOP in trouble to begin with.
See ya Denny, Glad you’re leaving pal. Take the rest of the RINOs with ya and maybe just maybe we’ll get back to being Republican.

Isn’t it interesting how when the Americans controlled Congress and their approval rating fell to 36% we lost it. Now the anti Americans run Congress and have an approval rating of 18%, but that is still bad news for the Republicans. Hmmmmmmmmmm. I’m missing something.

AND not only is this 18% BAD NEWS for the GOP, why it’s GREAT NEWS for the rat!!!!!!!! Oh yeah, the rat will pick up more seats because the lemmings still believe the GOP runs the House. Of course for 12 years the ratmedia acted as if the rat ran the House when they didn’t but as i said I must be missing something.

I had the same impression. Here is a guy with “coaching” history, but he looked like a candidate for The Biggest Loser. Here is a guy who did to the budget what he did to his waist line. I broke my arm in high school wrestling and I know it is no easy sport, but Hastert never seemed to act like my coaches. He lost the fire.

“Hastert jumped the shark when he protested the FBI raid on Rep. W. Jefferson’s (D-Louisiana) DC office.”

That is correct.

At that point, I started to believe that he too had things to hide, and I bet he does…plenty.

Mrs. Hastert, please expound -- your comments don't amount to any type of rebuttal, just ad hominum attack.
