WAVERLY, Ohio (AP) — Nearly 100 drunken-driving suspects in this southern Ohio town avoided convictions or jail time last year after making voluntary $1,000 donations to the police department, county records show.
More than a third of the drunken-driving cases filed by Waverly police in Pike County Court last year were dismissed, according to a report published Sunday in The Columbus Dispatch.
And at least that much in legal fees if you get a lawyer to beat the charges down. I would take it in a heartbeat. Not that I drive after drinking. I gave up that stupid habit years ago.
Pike County has a population of about 30,000. The largest incorporated area is the township of Pee Pee, which surrounds Waverly. Pike voted for Strickland (D) over Blackwell 73-26, and Brown (D) over Dewine 60-40.

In the November 2000 race, the outcome in Pike County was quite close. Countywide, 5,333 people voted for Bush and 4,923 voted for Gore. Nader received 176 votes.

Traffic fines are so abused as to be a medieval toll on bridges. All over this country traffic enforcement is abused to raise revenue by local governments. When I lived in Texas in the late 90’s is was recognized as a huge problem. Along I-10 in West Texas there were small 1 horse towns (less that 50 people total) that had mayors and judges with 6 figure salaries, all supported by fines. Texas made a stab at fixing the problem by enacting a law that all traffic fines go directly into a state fund, not the locality in which they were issue, to remove the conflict of interest.
No kidding! I got pulled over there while driving a rental car. My crime? 56 MPH in a 55 zone!
I went for speed over quality!
Actulally even a realtively poor drunk would look at this as a godsend. When you add up attorneys’ fees, court costs, and the insurance impact of a singe DUI conviction, you’re probably looking at about a $10,000 hit, plus the record. Only $1,000 to get out of that horror is a wonder.
