Iraq 'surge' working, Petraeus tells Congress

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- The troops "surge" in Iraq is improving the security situation in the country, Gen. David Petraeus, the top U.S. commander in Iraq, told Congress on Monday.

He said U.S. forces could be reduced to pre-surge levels by next summer.

Before Petraeus began to testify, the head of the House Armed Services Committee challenged Petraeus and Ambassador Ryan Crocker to convince him that the war effort in Iraq is worth continuing.

Rep. Ike Skelton, D-Missouri, told Petraeus and Crocker that he was particularly curious whether reconciliation among warring Iraqi sects is imminent.

"I hope, General Petraeus and Ambassador Crocker, that you can persuade us that there is substantial reason to believe that Iraq will turn around in the very near future," Skelton said.

Rep. Duncan Hunter, R-California, warned Petraeus that he would face hostile skepticism from Democrats.

"The last week or so has been spent attacking your credibility, with major attacks here in the United States, some of them emanating from right here" in Congress, Hunter said.

Further in the article: "General Petraeus is there to succeed," Feinstein said. "I don't think he's an independent evaluator."

LOL!!! Yeah, wouldn't want to listen to someone who's goal is SUCCESS!

The MSM will have to wait for Osama to speak to find out what the ‘truth’ is. These lousy American generals are all ‘liars’.

This is that last line in the sand. President Bush MUST start prosecuting some of these dims for treason and sedition. He cannot afford, for the sake of freedom, to allow this new tone to go on any longer. We are at war with the dim party, as surely as we are at war with al qaeda. We must start prosecuting that war too... what we need is a DC SURGE!

In the future, when the Demotraitors start quoting certain parts of the Petraeus report as proof that they were right, let us only hope that at least 1 Republican will have the guts to stand up and remind them that they are the ones that said Petraeus is a liar, a puppet, and nothing inn the report is to be believed.

The Demotraitors will do this. There will be parts of this report they like. At that time the media will NEVER point out that they were the ones that told us the report was completely false. I only hope that some Republican somewhere will point this out over and over and over and over.................

You didn’t know?

Bush is keeping the high road, so the public and the base can respect him for not defending America against domestic traitors.

Great strategery, Senor Bush.

I wish I could be hopeful at this, but I know they won’t believe it anyway.

It’s really really sad when such a large portion of the country is bound and determined for failure, to the point that they try to destroy anyone capable of bringing success.

I guess this is what they mean when then say the left is mentally ill. Only the mentally ill seek failure.

Right, and Feinstein is there to make sure it is perceived as a failure. A true independent evaluator, to be sure. /s

Let’s see; the General: BS - US Military Academy (a school that actually has standards), PhD - Princeton, extremely successful general.

The opposition; Kennedy - felon, cheater at H**vard, Kerry, lying b**stard, capable of shooting self for medals, gigolo(’cuz he couldn’t earn an honest dollar), Hillary - never a real job, couldn’t run a McDonalds, Pelosi - bimbo extreme, Kos Kids - trufers.....

Which to believe, which to believe........

I read somewhere else that the dems have switched talking points from “the surge isn’t working” to “it’s working, but it’s too late.” Interpret that as “the surge didn’t work fast enough to keep us from making complete fools of ourselves by opposing it.”

Okay, I have to own her, but I don’t have to approve of her.

General Petraeus wants to succeed? Wow Diane, what an amazing observation.

Calmly, rationally and without hysterics, arm waving or breast beating, the good General has dismembered and made to look totally foolish the entire left wing smear machine. With amazing clarity and attention to detail using his graphs and charts he explained precisely what has and is happening in Iraq. He has proclaimed that we have been to date successful and will be more so if allowed to continue and even has said we may be able to bring home as many as 5 Brigades by mid 2008.

What now will the left do in response to the measured professional rhetoric of this great leader? I don't know but I can guess and can only hope some of our Representatives will stand up and be heard.
