You have to hand it to President Bush he is persistent.
The Iraq war would be a good case of persistence, if not exactly a good war. But lets not get distracted by that war this week as there are many more examples of Bushs persistence which dont carry the emotional baggage of Iraq.
Without taking time to analyze each and every one of them, there were the nomination of Harriet Miers to the Supreme Court, the proposal to turn U.S. port security over to the Mideast city-state of Dubai, the dogged loyalty to Donald Rumsfeld and Alberto Gonzales, and the two failed efforts at comprehensive immigration reform.
To those we may now add the presidents continuing effort to break down the borders of the nation anyway he can.
I have already in this column written extensively on the foolishness of an open border with Mexico, the cupidity of the proposed North American Union, and the absurdity of putting Arabs in charge of shipping through U.S. ports.
But last week, with hardly anyone noticing, the president took another shot at chipping away at American sovereignty by opening our southern border to Mexican trucking firms in a pilot program that he clearly wants to expand quickly.
According to the Associated Press, The U.S. plans to give as many as 25 Mexican firms permission [to haul their cargo anywhere in the United States] by the end of September and add another 25 companies each month until hitting 100 by the end of this year under the one-year program.

Remember those words!
America has probably become the first nation in the history of the world to voluntarily abandon borders it could defend. The beginning of the end.
As there was NO proposal to "turn port security" over to ANYBODY, there appears to be some factual deficiencies in the article.
BTW, anybody want to tell us who runs those port operations today? And how much has been spent on security-related measures at those ports?
here: "There is also the disturbing question of the complete lack of controls on these drivers, who will be driving multi-ton vehicles that are potentially weapons of mass destruction. First of all, there is no requirement that they have to speak or read English."there: "Since 1971, federal law has said that commercial drivers must read and speak English "sufficiently to understand highway traffic signs and signals and directions given in English and to respond to official inquiries."
Truck drivers will be required to read, speak English [Free Republic]
Where is that pic of GWB strangling kittens, lol.
Someone should tell MADD that DUI does not apply anymore. All of those laws they fought to get passed are quite irrelevant when applied to the driver of that Tecate truck.
Exactly how drunk do you need to be to lose your license in Mexico? Would our local cops even know if you had?
Oh yes, ICE will give every one of them an English test at the border as they scream up the interstate without need for an inspection. Why, I'll bet those testing stations are in place right now seeing as they've been allowed on the roads!
Liar. The government will ignore that law just as they selectively ignore them now and you know it.
The taxpayers of every state have funded new signs with exit numbers in addition to street names so that the Mexicans can read the signs. That was a trade subsidy too.

It hadn’t really dawned on me that this Mexican trucker thing was going to be more than goods being carried across the border rather than transferred, until I was discussing it with someone and the question came up about whether the trucks were going to return home empty.
Then it finally came to me, “Why would the trucks go home at all?”
I think that most Americans don’t realize the significance of the events that are now overtaking us.
God Bless The USA NAU.

I’m sure you could pull it out of some dark place. :^)
I've come to consider my President a traitor.
Actually, the trucks would likely transport other goods or raw materials back to Mexico. There’s no profit in running empty loads, and absolutely no profit in abandoning $100,000 dolllar vehicles after each trip.
And since the program closely tracks these truckers, who are identified and cleared, it’s unlikely they are trying to sneak in as illegal immigrants.
They won’t be able to do in-country runs, so unless companies break the law they have no choice but to go back.
And we DO inspect quite a few loads, so there would be a good possibility of them being caught if some company tried to pay them cheap to run things from one state to another.
I’m more concerned that the trucks don’t meet safety standards and the drivers aren’t trained for U.S. driving conditions.
Don’t get emotional. The writer got his facts wrong in this case.
May I suggest Daily Kos?
I’m sure the feds will give this the same meticulous care they have given our borders and employment roles.
It is rather amusing that one of the prevailing assumptions appears to be that these Mexican trucks will deadhead back across the border.
Wouldn’t it be more efficient to agitate or petition your State government to enforce its traffic laws?
Maybe we could load the trucks up with all the illegal immigrants we want to deport. :-)
Works for me.
