Senate votes to ban Mexican trucks from U.S. highways

With a veto-proof majority, no less! The AP says the House passed a similar bill in July but I can’t find the roll for that one. The Senate has long been the squishier of the two when it comes to Mexico, though, so I’ll assume the House margin was veto-proof too. (Update: It was. See below.)

Here’s the Senate roll. You may be surprised, although you shouldn’t be.

Update: Noam Askew emails to say that the House vote to ban the trucks was 362-63. Bush is staring down the barrel of an embarrassing veto override.

Update: A fair point by Rob Port about the benefits of free trade. NAFTA’s had a decade to “invigorate” Mexico’s economy, though, and yet the oceans of illegals continue to pour over the border. Why would you believe trucking would make any appreciable difference?

To Bush and the pro-amnesty fools:

GO SCREW.

And the NAFTA arbitration panel will simply overturn this meaningless measure. The only way to actually prevent Mexican trucks from transiting the USA is for the USA to withdraw from NAFTA.

The President's "North American Union" - "Open Borders" BS really makes me mad.

Seems The War on Terror is the only thing me and The President agree.

Sad, very sad.

This would be a victory for the Teamsters who’ve fought against allowing the Mexican truck drivers crossing the border, yes?

It's a victory for every American citizen, union member or not.

Right on!! Do not reward mexico for promoting the violation of the immigration laws of America!

Money sent from America to Mexico is the biggest form of revenue for Mexico. I don’t think NAFTA was designed around illegals earning money in America and sending it south. And screw the trucks too. it is complete bullsh*t that nobody is going to lose their job.

“And the NAFTA arbitration panel will simply overturn this meaningless measure.”

Does NAFTA stipulate that mexican workers and equipment must be used within the US? I’d be surprised if you could cite some part of it that does.....

Just about the same here, except I even have major problems with the way he's allowed that to run (e.g., al Sadr, Iran, etc.).

True, but you have to break the news slowly to the corporate conservatives/class warriors. They can’t reconcile that they aren’t at heart patriots, but traitors.

NAFTA empowered unelected and unaccountable arbitrators to “interpret” the treaty when there’s a dispute. Therefore the treaty says whatever they want it to.
