ICE: Tab to remove illegal residents would approach $100 billion
cnn ^ | 9-12-07

It would cost at least $94 billion to find, detain and remove all 12 million people believed to be staying illegally in the United States, the federal government estimated Wednesday.

Julie Myers, the head of Immigration and Customs Enforcement, gave the figure during a hearing before a Senate committee Wednesday.

She acknowledged it was based on "very rough calculations."

An ICE spokesman later said the $94 billion did not include the cost of finding illegal immigrants, nor court costs -- dollar amounts that are largely unknowable.

He said the amount was calculated by multiplying the estimated 12 million people by the average cost of detaining people for a day: $97. That was multiplied by the average length of detention: 32 days.

ICE officials also considered transportation costs, which average $1,000 per person.

But that amount can vary widely, the spokesman said. Some deportees are simply driven by bus across the border, while others must take charter planes to distant countries, he said.

Finally, the department looked at personnel costs, bringing the total to roughly $94 billion.

The statistic is likely to become one more piece of fodder in the heated debate between the Bush administration -- which has fought for a "path to citizenship" for people who have lived peaceably in the United States -- and those who want to see more aggressive enforcement of immigration laws, up to, and including, the deportation of all illegal immigrants.

It didn’t cost the gov’t anything for them to get here. Just enforce the laws and they will go home on their own.

Based on a population of 300 million, that’s $333.33 per person. I’ll pay my share.

Apply the same tax laws to them that are applied to John Public Citizen and the IRS will find them much cheaper and quicker.

The cost of finding ILLEGAL aliens is largely unknowable?

Ya mean the SSA won't tell ICE how much they want for the information (names, addresses, employers' names, employers' addresses) that the SSA has in its Earnings Suspense File? That will find the millions and millions working "on the books" with bogus, stolen SSN's and IRS individual ID numbers. The SSA has another file for the ones working ILLEGALLY on "no work" SSNs.

Wow, those federal agencies can be mean to each other.

The is nonsense. Stop all public assistance, cancel all driver licenses, remove their kids from our schools and stop employers from hiring them. Won’t cost nothing. They’ll go home.

Cut off all the freebies, most of them will leave. Build the fence. Enforce existing immigration laws.

Note to ICE: Stop the BS, no one believes this government anymore.

We’re spending nearly two billion a week and who knows how many billions (trillions?) overall in the hellhole of Iraq, so this 100 billion price tag to clean up our own country sounds like a real bargain.

According to the USDOJ, such programs pay for themselves with tons of money left over.

Why do those putting these numbers completely refuse to look at the FACTS?

They say $100billion.....BUT:

What about cutting off the freebie benefits so many illegals are taking advantage of? How much would that save? How many would be more likely to return on their own?

Add to that - major fines for employers who hire illegals... shut down the jobs for illegals and how many would return on their own?

Cut off all Federal funds and aid to states or municipalities who act as “sanctuary” areas.

Then, I believe the tab would be significantly less than $100billion.

If employment opportunities for illegals can be effectively eliminated by aggressive enforcement against prospective employers via stiff fines and/or criminal prosecution for KNOWINGLY employing illegal immigrants, the problem of illegal immigration will effectively end because there would be little economic incentive to immigrate to the US as employers in the states would no longer hire illegals because of the very real threat of monetary sanctions and/or incarceration.

You know how much it costs the US government to police the quality of all the drugs made in the US? Very, very little. Instead, they pass laws requiring companies to police it themselves, and then periodically they come around, check the documentation, and levy fines in cases in which the docs are not in order.

Why must they be kept in order? Because it's REQUIRED.

Names must match SSN's. And companies should have to pay to demonstrate upon inspection that they do match, or face fines.

See? The gov't would not employ millions of people do keep those docs at the company --they company would be required 2 do that THEMSELVES.

It's quite simple. I mean, why do they have Taxpayer ID Numbers in the first place?

Because the government is party to illegal immigration --they know the names and addresses of most of the illegals ALREADY, and they know who employes them.

It's verrrrry simple.

New fed policy which starts soon is disallowing all tax deductions for any emplyee not matched to a SS#. Some Illegals will leave.

When US seriously cracks down on illegals, which will take time for “serious” to be prove, more illegals will be gone.

Denial of US “welfare” payments and no anchor babies allowed, more will leave.

An actual FENCE BUILT along border which prevents traffic BOTH WAYS, many more illegals gone.

Darn, we used to get billed $700 for hammers and toilet seats, why would 1 trilion bother us to get this real job done.

The solution to this problem is simple:

1. Force all employers to check the Social Security # of each and every current employee, as well as, all future applicants. If the SSN is fake, no job period.
2. Employers are automatically checked on an annual basis to determine if they have followed the law.
3. Employers are also spot-checked without warning to determine if they have followed the law.
4. Automatic HUGE fines and Prison time for employers who break the law.

Following this ‘Recipe’ problem is self-correcting with a fraction of the cost of forced removal.

Illegal Aliens will self-deport if there are no jobs.
