Not a real speech of course, but the paraphrases of real quotes by real "opposition" candidates are linked to the latest Democrat operative debate.

It is OUTRAGEOUS to me that Democrats, in a time of war, are demanding rebuttal.

When, during WWII, arguably the last combat world-wide war we fought (WWIII being the Cold War, fought largely without combat forces) did the OPPOSITION party bitch and moan constantly about the Commander-in-Chief and his generals?

I think it's true that throughout history, republicans supported democrat presidents in time of war. Democrats are just filthy rotten pigs.

I distinctly recall Trent Lott and republicans making only the nicest and subtlest noises when Clinton took military action in Kosovo, Afghanistan and Iraq. Or during Carter's Iran disaster.

But democrats made pigs of themselves during every military action under republican presidents. A vile classless bunch.

“…Tonight, a nation eager for change in Europe heard the President speak about his plans for the future.

But once again, the President failed to provide either a plan to successfully end the war or a convincing rationale to continue it.

The President rightfully invoked the valor of our troops in his speech, but his plan does not amount to real change.

Soldiers take a solemn oath to protect our nation, and we have a solemn responsibility to send them into battle only with clear and achievable missions.

Tonight, the President provided neither…”

“…So tonight, we find ourselves at a critical moment.

Do we continue to heed the President's call that Europe needs more time, more of our money, and the indefinite presence of thousands of American troops -- exactly the same number as nine months ago?

Or do we follow what is in our nation's best interest and redefine our mission in Europe?

Republicans believe it is time to change course.

We think it's wrong that the President tells us there's not enough money for our welfare because he is spending $10 billion a year in Europe.

We have put forth a plan to responsibly and rapidly begin a reduction of our troops in Europe…”

“…An endless and unlimited military presence in Europe is not an option.

Democrats and Republicans in Congress and throughout the nation can not and must not stand idly by while our interests throughout the world are undermined and our Armed Forces are stretched toward the breaking point.

We intend to exercise our Constitutional duties and profoundly change our military involvement in Europe…”Lil' Jackie Reed

Sorry RD, but I don’t get the point of this posting ... did or did not Dewey make this speech?

Teddy Roosevelt would slap the Democrats around like little kids. They need a wake-up call, and quick.

This thread is an insult to Thomas Dewey. I really think that it is poor satire. Thomas Dewey never made any such speech. In fact nobody would have made this speech in 1944.

What the defeatists of today would have said in World War II would include:

Why in November 1942 is FDR fighting the Germans in North Africa? After all, it was not the Germans who attacked Pearl Harbor on December 7th.

The only thing the President was doing at that time in the Pacific was to send Marines to fight in a quagmire on an island named Guadalcanal. The island is no where near Japan. Obviously, FDR was failing in his promise to bring Admiral Yammamoto to justice.

If the defeatists of today had been around in 1942, we’d never have won World War II.

If American ever wakes up to the rottenness that is at the core of this democratic party, a generation will pass before one ever sits in the White house again.

Democrats are not to be taken seriously on any issue relevant to the future of this country. Their primary interest is in buying votes by handing out Federal money.

How about your indicating in the title that it’s a satire?

It is OUTRAGEOUS to me that Democrats, in a time of war, are demanding rebuttal.

But the nation is not at war.

A small volunteer military force is at war.

The ADMINISTRATION, for heaven's sake, is not even at war, except possibly the Defense Department. Possibly.

The reason your faux Dewey speech would have been inconceiveable is because the Roosevelt administration understood the meaning of war, and because they, through executive orders and enabling legislation transformed the nation into a warmaking machine in just a few short weeks between December 8, 1941 and mid-February, 1942.

They understood that press censorship, full-time propaganda operations, total control of labor and capital, unlimited expansion of the armed forces, internment or expulsion of enemy aliens, militant border control, and rapid, even reckless, military operations directed at conquest and subjection of the enemy were all required to mobilize that nation for war, and to keep it there.

This didn't hurt, either:

..."the President is hereby authorized and directed to employ the entire naval and military forces of the United States and the resources of the Government to carry on war against the Imperial Government of Japan; and, to bring the conflict to a successful termination, all of the resources of the country are hereby pledged by the Congress of the United States."

George Bush could have had anything he asked for on September 16, 2001. He didn't ask for much.

If Dewey or anyone else had rebutted FDR during WWII, they would have been on a one way ticket to Fort Leavenworth sooooo fast...

In many ways we had a much saner society back then.
