The real issue here is how the news is going to handle this and if there is going to be an investigation. Thailand’s rescue services are about as primitive as any country in the world. Thailand is lucky that this accident happened within sight of the airport and not in the countryside. It is the only way there will be any chance of survivors. Hopefully this accident will cause some officials to wake up but I doubt it.
My contacts in Phuket say nothing released yet.
Nation had the following online:
List of passengers injured in the plane crash at Phuket Airport treated at Siriroj Phuket Hospital and Krungthep Phuket Hospital.
Bangkok Phuket Hospital (21)
1. Thais - 6
2. British - 7
3. Iranians - 3
4. Australians - 2
5. German - 1
6. Iranian - 1
7. Irish - 1

My personal feelings aside, the Bangkok Hospital group hospitals are pretty good as far as things here go.
Nation reporting there were 74 Thais onboard so that would put the number of foreigners at 54.
Fox News reported over 60 dead now, quite a few listed as missing right now.
Dreadful. Prayers for the victims.
Prayers to all involved.
Official death toll is up to 66 now. It is nighttime now here in Thailand (7:41PM). The news is showing a lot of video of the wreckage. The death toll is going to go higher.
Heard they diverted a few flights to Krabi - not sure how much traffic they can handle.
Yes normally those kinda flights are packed to the gills with Europeans.
What is the carrying capacity of the plane involved.
Said it went down in a very heavy rainfall. Seems it crashed in an accessible site, they have video of it on Fox.
Reports there were 123 passengers and 5 crew.

Nope, right off the runway. The problem is Thailand has very few trained EMTs and nobody even close to a US Paramedic level. I wouldn't be surprised if a large number of the deaths were caused by the rescuers because of bad patient care.
While living in Tokyo I used to stay at the Karon Villa and Patong Beach. What an amazing and beautiful place. The Thai people are very friendly and they actually like Americans.
I love Thailand and the Thai people!
Anybody know what kind of plane it was?
MD82
Looks like the solid section over the wingbox (just aft of the two open exit doors seen here, survived pretty well. Strongest part of the structure.
Nose of a MD-80/82 is quiiiiet for sure, but in a situation like this, where you sit matters fer sure.
The latest... according to Thai television news... 40+ passengers were Thai. The rest were foreigners. The aircraft was leased by Orient Thai from another country. Orient Thai did not take out insurance in Thailand on the aircraft so this might get very interesting. Orient Thai is saying they will cover all medical expenses.
