President Bush has settled on retired federal judge Michael B. Mukasey to replace Alberto Gonzales as Attorney General, two sources familiar with the decision said Sunday.
The appointment of Mukasey, 66, considered a law-and-order conservative and authority on national security issues, could come as early as Monday morning, the sources said.

“Bush is a pathetic weasel.
West Wing leakes Olson. Reid threatens Olson. Bush backs down.”
Lets not forget how Bush threw Bolton and Rummy under the bus as well. I believe McCain would be even worse at Democrat appeasement~!

why is this keyworded with ‘banglist’?
To: umgud
That might not be so bad. Bush could nominate a very conservative, qualified person, let the Dems filibuster the guy, and make an interim appointment of a truly extreme comservative/libertarian. Then the Dems are screwed either way, adn we’ll almost be happier if they refuse to vote on confirmation. This would be hell on the official nominee, though, so Bush would have to make sure to choose someone willing to take the abuse.

“WHOEVER mentioned folding up any tents??”
Actually, you did. Your suggestion is that the President not do anything, excepting conduct of the war, that Reid and Pelosi don’t agree with. All I did was, following your lead, suggest that, if he does that, he might just as well forget the ceremonial title of President and just tell Reid and Pelosi to run the show while he goes fishing.

“What Ive gotten real tired of is people automatically dissing the President for something they dont like that hes supposedly done, when all theyre basing their displeasure on is rumor.”
I think that would be perfectly reasonable if we had a President that actually talks to the people from time to time. For most of this Presidency all we’ve had to work with are rumors.

I agree, we will never know — and I don’t think that speaks well of the President either.

Nan Aron of the Alliance for Justice recommended Mukasey as a pick for the Supreme Court. The Alliance for Justice actively opposed Samuel Alito and John Roberts for their confirmations to the Supreme Court. zat so ping.....

You are greatly overrating what an AG can or cannot do people. Just give it a rest and let it go. An AG takes his orders from the President of the United States and he answers only to the President. 99.999% of AG in US history are not remembered by anyone for the simple reason that AG is just a a federal employee who obeys orders and supervises the Justice Department that has been in existence for generations and it is now as it was 70 years ago with a very little change on how it operates. He cannot do anything negative or positive on this issue in particular that this guy is going to serve 15 months only.
