President Bush has settled on retired federal judge Michael B. Mukasey to replace Alberto Gonzales as Attorney General, two sources familiar with the decision said Sunday.
The appointment of Mukasey, 66, considered a law-and-order conservative and authority on national security issues, could come as early as Monday morning, the sources said.

Chuckie already suggested him.

Dear Mr. President:
blah blah blah
The candidates I would advise you to consider are:
The Honorable Arlen Specter, Republican Senator from Pennsylvania.
The Honorable Ann Williams, Judge, Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals, nominated by President Ronald Reagan to the Northern District of Illinois.
The Honorable Edward Prado. Judge, Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals, nominated by you and unanimously confirmed by the 108th Senate.
The Honorable Michael Mukasey, Judge, Southern District of New York, nominated by President Ronald Reagan.
The Honorable Stanley Marcus, Judge, Eleventh Circuit Court of Appeals, nominated by President Ronald Reagan.
All of these individuals appear to be legally excellent, ideologically moderate, and several of them would add diversity to the Court. All of them have a history of bipartisan support, are within the mainstream, and have demonstrated a commitment to the rule of law.
Blah blah blah.
My profound hope is that, should there be a Supreme Court vacancy this summer, you will nominate a candidate who will unite us, not divide us. I am confident that by working together we can achieve that goal. I look forward to hearing from you soon.
Sincerely,
Charles E. Schumer
United States Senator

Reid will be crowing. That’s what irks me about this pick.
I suppose the WH decided that since there are only 15 1/2 months left, they might as well compromise, rather than fight.
He’s described as a “law and order Conservative”.
Sounds good to me.
settles? sheesh.
Mukasey is quite conservative and deeply religious. Frankly, I am shocked that Schumer approves of him.
THAT ALONE, should worry you.
If Chuckie thinks of him as being as good as Arlen...
oh well. Another chance to argue for conservatism has been shot down in bipartisan fashion.
And I’m guessing it won’t take more than a few weeks after his confirmation for the Dems to attack him anyway.
He sounds OK to me! I don't blame the President for not wanting to waste time and give the Democrats the opportunity to bloviate for months about Ted Olson. Whoever is Attorney General will have to deal with terrorism cases; why not someone who's already done that?
Oh excuse me, you’re right — George Bush should just fold up his tent and let Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosi be the new co-Presidents. It will be a LOT better than those simultaneous, ongoing partisan battles.
Do you know this to be true, or is it something someone reported as 'possible'? Everyone has been assuming, or hoping it was Ted Olson, but I never heard the President say one way or the other.
I'd prefer he spend his time on problems with the Middle East and North Korea. Let the Democrats stew in their own juices about not being able to beat up on Bush for his AG choice.
A campaign staffer of the most liberal Republican presidential candidate throughout all history? Hmmm...

it’s been a constant fight
Lets be honest with the dems he doesnt stand a chance and when the spineless repubs were in the majority they were scared of the dems too
the anti anites are our in full force..... just sitting back like vultures to devour our own.
