Police fear the worst may have happened to the mother of the toddler known as pumpkin, abandoned in Melbourne.

The mother who until recently lived in the Auckland suburb of Mt Roskill has disappeared without trace.

Not even 24 hours of publicity about her three-year-old daughter has prompted her to come forward.

And tonight 3 News can reveal that Pumpkin's father made a documentary about an older daughter, who left home and never came back.

Police found his partner’s car at Auckland international airport last night.

They do not believe she has left the country and they hold grave concerns for her safety.

''We're concerned that Anan has not been able to contact us in relation to her daughter and we have had contact with Xue and Anan over the last twelve months over family violence issues,'' Detective Senior Sergeant Simon Scott said today.

3 News has been able to establish that Nai Yin Xue appeared in the Waitakere Court in June and was convicted of assaulting his wife.

A week later he reappeared for breaching a protection order but that charge was dismissed.

The couple are believed to have separated while living in Mt Roskill

She moved to Johnsonville in Wellington but there are suggestions the couple got back together again.

Xue runs a publishing company and is well known within the Chinese community as a martial arts expert.

The popular Chinese website skykiwi has been overrun with discussion about him. They say the father was rude to people and he would use his martial arts against people to hurt people and to abuse people

Police say he visited the Henderson police station three hours before he boarded the flight to Melbourne.

They said he dropped off some possessions but would not elaborate.

Little Qian Xun Xue dubbed ‘Pumpkin’ is still in foster care in Melbourne.

Xue was the subject of a short documentary about the disappearance of an elder daughter from a previous marriage.

Xue says his daughter left home while he was away teaching martial arts overseas.

The documentary, made by students at the UNITEC School of performing and screen arts.

It's called ‘Kung Fu Father’ and is about Nai Yin Xue missing older daughter, who disappeared 5 years ago.

In it, Xue says she ran away because he put his kung fu ahead of her.

But later he married again and a second daughter was born.

In the nine minute doco, Xue made numerous appeals for his daughter to return.

"Give me a chance, to remedy those things that papa did wrong. Daughter please come back,” an emotional Xue says

But the documentary makers remained unconvinced.

And they felt his wife was afraid to speak.

Tonight, a copy of the documentary is in the hands of the police as they try to unravel the mystery of how Xue came to abandon his second daughter and discover what has happened to his second wife.

This case is beginning to look very grim indeed.

The mother has disappeared, and the police all but say they think the father killed her.

Oh my, how sad. The story just keeps getting weirder. I guess little Pumpkin was the lucky one, since others around him just disappear, including her mom.

It’s all over the Aussie and NZ web sites.

Just in case some haven't heard, apparently, the worst case has played out for Pumpkin's mom: Pumpkin case: Woman's body in car

Not surprising, but sad if/when confirmed. Hopefully they will find and bring Pumpkin's dad to justice.
