Republican Romney ad criticizes his party and calls for change (hits spending, illegals!)

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Recognizing political change as the hot new commodity, Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney is launching a television ad this week in New Hampshire and Iowa casting himself as the Republican best able to reclaim a wayward party and lead it in a new direction.

Romney, a former governor of Massachusetts, lays out a tough bill of particulars against his party, portraying Republicans as ethically challenged big spenders and delivering a veiled slap at President Bush and two of his main rivals on the subject of immigration.

"If we're going to change Washington, Republicans have to put our own house in order," Romney says, speaking directly to the camera. "We can't be like Democrats -- a party of big spending. We can't pretend our borders are secure from illegal immigration. We can't have ethical standards that are a punch line for Jay Leno."

The 30-second ad will begin airing in New Hampshire Wednesday and will become a part of the campaign's current ad rotation in Iowa by Saturday.

I’m not talking about who the best person to defeat Hillary is. I’m talking about the candidate who most closely matches the sentiments you’ve expressed.

Anyways, Romney is the only major candidate in the race on either side who evokes a higher “definitely would not vote for” response in the polls than Hillary. So even on that point you are mistaken.

You say his ability to win in Massachusetts is a remarkable achievement and he is the one candidate most likely to govern as a conservative.
I say those two statements are mutually exclusive.

GOVERNOR MITT ROMNEY:
“If we’re going to change Washington, Republicans have to put our own house in order.

“We can’t be like Democrats – a party of big spending.

“We can’t pretend our borders are secure from illegal immigration.

“We can’t have ethical standards that are a punch line for Jay Leno.

“When Republicans act like Democrats, America loses.

“It’s time for Republicans to start acting like Republicans.

“It’s time for a change and change begins with us.

“I’m Mitt Romney and I approve this message.”

-------------------

Absolutely Awesome! Mitt can credibly run as the clear outside the beltway, squeaky clean, results-oriented candidate. The video is quite effective and very believable.

I think he realizes it’s a campaign, not a coronation.

Wrong, Wrong and Wrong.

NOT such a recent conversion.

These people, the ones who actually know him, trust him.

My problem with Romney, and Rudy as well, concerning their recent conversions to conservative positions is that you will never(or rarely) hear them say they were wrong for their old positions and why they were wrong. As a result, they come across as too slick by half and also as panderers.

These are not the actions of leaders or statesmen, but mere opportunistic politicians.

I, too, would be more comfortable with a life-long conservative with a proven track record. However, Larry Craig is proof that such credentials don't equate to credibilty.

I welcome converts to conservatism, and think I'd be more comfortable supporting such a person for the presidency than I would be supporting a conservative who has rather recently defected, at least in large part, to liberalism. Such defection is why I'd have a very hard time supporting McCain.

The United States is a nation of immigrants. Throughout our history, legal immigrants have brought energy, ideas, strength, and diversity to our country, our economy, and our culture. This must continue. But in the post-9/11 world, immigration is more of a national security issue. A government that cannot secure its borders and determine who may enter and who may not, abrogates a fundamental responsibility. I am committed to:

Securing our borders and enforcing immigration laws. Amnesty is not an option and the toleration of “sanctuary cities” must end.
Reviewing our immigration laws and policies to ensure they advance our national interests.
Uniting Americans by welcoming legal immigrants willing to learn English, assimilate into our communities, and become productive citizens.

No thanks. The only words I want to hear from any candidate regarding health care is, “Its none of the federal government’s business. The constitution leaves it to the states and the people.”

Guess you’ve forgotten that you used to be a small government conservative.

He told me personally that only the police should have guns.

I’ll take him at his word.

The word is INFRINGED not pinched.

And Spiff, the NRA is a lobbying organization, not a Second Amendment organization. Word is they might endorse Rudy, probably because he is a RINO like Mitt.

Romney held the line against new gun control laws in Massachusetts, despite an 85% Democrat legislature.

Holding the line means Vetoing the AWB not kissing the asses of the 85% who support you.

His ability to win and survive in Taxachussettes is a remarkable achievement.

Not when you consider the legislature in Massachusetts is 85% liberal which reflects the voters choice. It makes Mitt one of them.

You forgot where the voice over says “without raising taxes” and fails to state he did raise fees.

He never put the Massachusetts house in order....

Don’t be fooled. There IS a reason Fred Thompson has the endorsement of pro-amnesty, OBLer George P. Bush. Fred speaks out of both sides of his mouth on amnesty/illegal immigration.

ENFORCE LAWS AGAINST ILLEGAL EMPLOYERS?

“But you don’t have to choose between those if you can have attrition through enforcement, if we enforce the law with regard to employers - and we have an eligibility verification system out there that’s voluntary; it should be mandatory.””

In 1996, he voted against creating an employer verification system so that businesses could identify illegal immigrants who applied for jobs in their companies.

“We haven’t enforced the law, in terms of employers. … For 20 years, we’ve not enforced the law, and that’s a part of the problem. You can’t enforce it all on the backs of the employers. People falsify information that they give employers and all that. That’s not a solution to the problem.”

ON EFFECTIVELY SECURING THE BORDERS?

“If it would work. I mean, I don’t know – that’s a technical problem. In this day and age, I would not think you would have to use bricks and mortar to get that job done.”

OPPOSES AMNESTY?

“I think that you have to realize that you’re either going to drive 12 million people underground permanently, which is not a good solution. You’re going to get them all together and get them out of the country, which is not going to happen. Or you’re going to have to, in some way, work out a deal where they can have some aspirations of citizenship, but not make it so easy that it’s unfair to the people waiting in line and abiding by the law.”

Will the REAL Fred Thompson, please stand up?

"He’s the only one of the candidates who can beat her." LOL...this canard was spread by the Rutards too. Didn't work then; won't work now. Romney is a liberal in conservative clothing and no amount of spin is going to negate this sinmple fact.

I was an early ‘friend of Fred’ but his non-campaign is feeling more and more anemic. Hate to say this but I think he’s not physically or mentally tough enough to run a strong race, let alone cross the finish line.

If Mitt is serious about ending earmarks and ridding the GOP caucus of all the crooks and pervs, he’ll be the exact candidate the country needs.

But he's not. He's just lying to you, telling you what you want to hear, just like he lied to the Massachusetts voters when he ran for governor.

The only thing Romney cares about is getting Romney elected.

I would love to see Romney debate Hillary on health care. He’s the only one of the candidates who can beat her.

You can't beat the enemy if you've ceded the battleground to them. Just say NO to federalized health care!

The only thing Romney cares about is getting Romney elected.

His agenda to run for governor was to fix the excomic situation which he solved. He was corned into those other issues because they knew in his personal life he did not approve, besides those things were already in place and he had no authority over them.

So it was a roost trying to defeat him but when new bills came across his desk which he did have authority over he voted pro life, Pro Marriage for a man and a women!

You are a Cynic!

If what you said was true Mitt would not have needed to spend hours working a solution to health care!

When Mitt ran for Governor he already had a plan how to run on and to solve the finances crisis!
