Poll: Clinton's lead grows, Thompson tops Giuliani
Other Candidates Still a Long Way behind
Published on: 09/20/07
ROCHESTER, N.Y. After officially declaring his candidacy, U.S. Senator Fred Thompson moves ahead of former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani in the race for the 2008 Republican presidential nomination. One-third (32%) of those who say they will vote in a Republican primary or caucus will vote for Thompson while 28 percent will vote for Giuliani. Much further back is John McCain, who continues his downward slide with 11 percent saying they would vote for the Arizona Senator, and 9 percent who say they would vote for former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney.
On the Democratic side, Senator Hillary Clinton continues to build on her large lead. Just under half (46%) of those who would vote in a Democratic primary or caucus would vote for the former First Lady while one-quarter (25%) would vote for Illinois Senator Barack Obama. Former vice president candidate and North Carolina Senator John Edwards is further back with 14 percent saying they would vote for him. No other candidate is in double digits.
These are some of the results of a Harris Poll of 2,372 U.S. adults surveyed online by Harris Interactive(R) between September 6 and 14, 2007. This survey included 769 adults who expect to vote in a Democratic primary or caucus and 504 adults who expect to vote in a Republican primary or caucus. Like all polls conducted well before an election, this should not be read as a prediction. Rather, it is a snap shot of the presidential "horse race", at an early stage in the race.

I think Thompson has hit his peak. A prime time TV actor (Law and Order), film star and former U.S. Senator. If he is not known by now...
We’re going to see Hillary skewered like no other candidate in U.S. history next year. I can hear the dredges at work right now. What this means is that she will have to ‘create’ fabrications about her opponent. Look for some real doozies folks. Then there are those FBI files that weren’t stolen for nothing.
I never thought I’d see the day...that someone who loathes the US Military, on the wrong side of the war, a socialist in every way...failed at healthcare...never ran a city, state, or business....this close to being elected President.
It's not like he has been in for the last 9 MONTHS and can't get out of the error margin.
LOL, he’s only been running for what, a week and a half?
Come on, you can do better than that.
Are there candidates out there who are better? Well, no. So who are folks going to run to, Hillary?
Fred is doing just fine and will continue to grow IMO. Look, none of us knows everything about any of these men yet, so blanket statements are not very wise. Fred has as much chance as any of these men, and I think more.
Time to start a collection. Rudy will need bus fare back to NooYawk!
Fair enough. But he has virtually been in the race for a lot longer that one week.
Hey brother, can you spare a...
LOL. If the truth were told, I think there’s your peaker.
Still, we shall see.
That is true, and of course none of us knows what the future holds. I have to say though, his virtual compares to other’s actual. He has laid out what his thoughts are, and the other knowns aren’t fairing too well.
You take care. We’ve got front row seats and the popcorn poppin’.
Hillary’s pact with Satan is finally kicking in, I see....
Fred’s bounce is fading. Down to a 1 pt lead in Rasmussen. I expect rudy to be back on top shortly.
It’s not that Fred is not well known, he’s an empty suit. All “aww shucks”, zero substance.
You are not very good with samples and statistics, are you?
You are comparing weekly with daily numbers — the daily well within the margin of error for the sample.
No, you are not good at polling; you are good at cherry picking data to give false impressions.
One could just as easily pull the poll results that the article leads with:
“After officially declaring his candidacy, U.S. Senator Fred Thompson moves ahead of former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani in the race for the 2008 Republican presidential nomination. One-third (32%) of those who say they will vote in a Republican primary or caucus will vote for Thompson while 28 percent will vote for Giuliani.”
