Mexican curriculum in Oregon schools stirs debate

Some Oregon high schools are adopting Mexico's public school curriculum to help educate Spanish-speaking students with textbooks, an online Web site, DVDs and CDs provided free by Mexico to teach math, science and even U.S. history.

The Oregon Department of Education and Mexico's Secretariat of Public Education are discussing aligning their curricula so courses will be valid in both countries...

Mexico has made its national curriculum available to communities across the U.S. since 2001 to encourage Mexican adults and youths to continue an education often abandoned back home due to limited resources.

"We wanted people to be aware that they have to study," said Patricia Ramos, the director of national affairs for Mexico's Institute for Adult Education and National Advisory of Education for Life and Work.

"You have to dare to study and make use of technology because that way, it will be easier to adapt to where you now live."

In other places, the curriculum was used to educate students' parents, rescue dropouts and even teach inmates. A program exists now at MacLaren Youth Correctional Facility in Woodburn.

Similar ventures are under way in Yakima, Wash., San Diego, Calif., and Austin, Texas.

It happens sometimes, and this is one of those times: I’m speechless.

Great. Our tax dollars at work

It wouldn’t be so pathetic if it weren’t for the fact that so many English speaking kids come out of high school ignorant.

Why in the world would they want to do something like that? It’s so foolish.

I don’t understand the logic of American teachers and school administrators doing this. They are teaching kids who are IN America—why wouldn’t they want to teach them AS Americans?

The only answer is the insanity of Identity Politics. It is somehow evil now when someone comes to America to work so they will mesh with American society. There’s this kneejerk hatred for anything American BY Americans. No faith in our political culture, no faith in our history, every founding father a slaveowner so blah blah blah.

What’s REALLY important is that these (mostly white, I’m guessing) liberal teachers GIVE these POOOOOR children “their” culture back to them, i.e. any culture but that evil white-male-dominated American culture. A culture which gives them the right to do this.

One of the biggest challenges will be finding more Spanish-speaking instructors, said Burk of the Oregon Department of Education.

Remember all those Mexicans that want to do those jobs Americans don't want to do? /s

Outrageous.
"The availability of resources is astounding," said Burk, who flew to Mexico with Oregon curriculum officials in August to discuss making equivalency standards official. "We're able to serve the students so much better if we're working together."
The availability of resources in America is astounding too. All you have to do is LEARN THE LANGUAGE! I don't think that is too much to ask for, is it? I mean, after all, you are in school. How about teaching English? Yet another reason for homeschooling.

You know, it would be a lot cheaper to send them back to Mexico and pay for their education down there. Same with their OB/GYN care. It'd cost us less to buy them round trip air fare and pay their medical cost in Mexico.

Great, so now even when in the USA, our illegals and anchor kids will be taught to push for reconquista, which is the curriculum in Mexican texts.

A country this stupid won’t survive.

Oregon has become a pitiful excuse for a state. Let’s hope this program is a BIG success and they are able to “help” MILLIONS of young mexican burglars to steal everything they can before slinking back to their home country.

I have to wonder if it isn’t againt the law, too. The vast majority of these kids are illegal aliens or children of illegal aliens.

I believe that we American taxpayers have limited resources too. Apparently the sheep in OR, TX, etc., however, have no end to patience and paying for the foreign invasion.

Insanity! Why would we teach Americans the mexican curriculum? Yes, I said Americans! They live here, LEGALLY, they are American. NOT MEXICAN!
They can have their culture, just not in schools. I don’t care how long it takes them to learn English, they better since english speaking americans have to learn Spanish.
If we do this, we mine as well teach the chinese their curriculum and so on.
This is a mistake. We are being WAY to nice to spanihs-speakers in the U.S.A. What kind of a country are we becoming? The people in Iraq are dying for a country that is falling apart.
